Wayne Rooney is the third highest all time top goal scorer for England, had 101 caps.
Looks very likely to become their most capped player ever and top goal scorer of all time as well but I still don't consider Roiney to be world class.
This is the player who has scored just once at a major finals.
I know the stats look good but if England had better options, which they haven't for years, remember they were calling on Defoe, Crouch etc then would Rooney had played so many games, I don't think so.

I have seen him play a few times for England (England V Wales at Old Trafford) and down CCS last season and he has awesome power and ability as a footballer but It is hard to judge him against the past generations players as the game has changed so much over the years.
Agreed his goalscoring record for England must be a disappointment even to himself.

It's an insult to compare him to Bobby charlton and other greats. To get 100 caps 30 or more years ago was a real achievement and to get 4o goals in that time was fantastic. In recent years so many new crap countries have gained international status and mean that qualifying campaigns usually involve 12 matches plus a few friendlies. 4 or 5 games in qualifying are against mediocre teams which mean that average players like Rooney get to score regularly. Put him against top teams like Germany, Spain and Brazil and he's done nothing to write home about.

Even without comparing his stats Gareth, I don't think he is world class.
Good but not world class.
Media fall over themselves to praise his 'talent' but he fails to deliver for England when it really matters.

His temperament is questionable. At the ccs last season he booted one of our players and should have been sent off.
As you say on the big stage he has failed to deliver.

As others have pointed out Rooney is a very good player but nowhere near a great one. His England goal scoring record is decent but compare it with Jimmy Greaves' 44 goals in only 57 games. Greaves was an authentically great goal scorer. Linneker was better too, and did it in world cup finals to boot.. Rooney is nowhere near the standard of those guys. Charlton eclipses them all as an all round great player, not just a goalscorer.

He had the potential to be the best in the world, when he was 16 bursting onto the scene he was amazing unfortunately i think his temperament let him down and he never reached his full potential a good player yes but not a great

he's in the bracket just beneath the real world class strikers like aguero, suarez, ibrahomovic etc. there's no shame in that.
he gets alot of haters because of the money he earns but that doesn't detract from him being an excellent striker. 161 league goals in 315, better than one in two over a period of 10 years is a great return for anyone.

Messi has scored 45 goals in 96 games for Argentina. (0.46 goals per game)
Ronaldo has scored 52 goals in 117 games for Portugal. (0.40 goals per game)
Bale has scored 14 in 48 games for Wales. (0.29 goals per game)
Rooney has scored 46 in 101 games for England. (0.45 goals per game)
Obviously he can't be held in the same regard as Messi and Ronaldo but he still isn't too shabby!

If he does but I do expect him to do so break the record then along with the appearances at some point if he is close then he will be considered a great and no-one can deny that. Scoring 46 goals for England is a huge achievement for anyone.
Messi and Ronaldo break records every season almost and are regarded as greats.
To me he's been changed into more of a CAM or CF past few seasons but he doesn't half put a shift in. He's kept United going and I think his work ethic is brilliant, he covers a lot of distance every game.
To think United paid 30 million for him or something? He's doubled that easily but for England he has the weight on his shoulders and I don't know why?
World Class, hmmm honestly no but he is a fantastic player to watch.

is he world class?i would say prob not though he is capable of world class moments of brilliance.most of the time id say he is in the next bracket down.iv always felt his workrate is what carries him.good footballing brain and very much a team player.i think he is rising to the call as england captain.also remember a goal every 2 and a bit internationals is not bad at all.rooney has started every game as the main centre forward .some games he,s been played wide ,behind the striker or a more of a midfield role.im happy as a englishman to have him as captain

Rooney is a fantastic player. Ask any defender in Europe and he will disagree with your bizarre opinion.

One goal in in a major finals?

But his personality and mentality have probably kept him back from being in that top echelon like Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane etc.

he's english and he earns alot of money, thats why people judge him more harshly.

Oops, meant one goal in World Cup finals
But he is still not world class IMO.

A one off. Rooney is amazing. Darcy is a fat pisshead. What a complete waste of talent.

I think Rooney's problem is he plays a different role for club then a different role for country .
He needs stability in his strongest position , then he is world class , when messed about he struggles to cope !
