OFFICIAL - " MALKY NEW MANAGER OF WIGAN "

"Malky Mackay the right man to lead us back to the Premier League." – Dave Whelan.

The club can confirm that Malky Mackay has been appointed as the new manager of Wigan Athletic.

The 42 year-old former Cardiff City and Watford manager was described by Latics Chairman Dave Whelan as ‘overwhelmingly the outstanding candidate’ for the position, following the departure last week of Uwe Rosler.

He said:

“He is the man to lead us back into the Premier League, I am convinced of that having met him and discussed the demands of the job ahead of him.

“He has led a team out of the Championship before and he knows this league inside out having played and managed in it. His achievements at Cardiff City were magnificent and we need a strong leader who will command the respect of a very experienced and talented dressing room – and he is the man to do it. I am delighted we have secured the services of someone who has so much to give to the game.“

Regarding the controversy which has surrounded Mackay in recent months, Mr Whelan said: “I know that this appointment will draw criticism in some quarters but we go into it with our eyes open and we have nothing to hide on this subject.

“Malky made a mistake, he knows that, we know that and we have discussed this issue at length face to face. He apologised publicly for what happened at the time and has paid for what he did in terms of the bad publicity he has received since and will no doubt continue to suffer in the future.

“But I believe that it is now time to move on. Contrary to the way he has been portrayed in recent months, the Malky Mackay I met this week, and who has been vouched for by the many different people from whom we have sought advice before making this appointment, is an honourable man.

“He is a committed family man with decent values and is a professional who has worked and thrived for over 20 years in the multi-cultural world of modern football. There is nothing more to say about this subject, and as far as I am concerned we draw a line under it from today.“

Belshill-born Mackay began his managerial career at Watford, graduating from being a player at Vicarage Road into the coaching set up under both Ade Boothroyd and later Brendan Rodgers. He took over the reins when Rodgers left for Reading in 2009 and stabilised the Hornets with two solid Championship finishes before joining Cardiff City in the summer of 2011.

In his first season, he took the Bluebirds to the Capital One Cup Final and the Championship Play-Offs. The following season, in 2013, he led them to the title and promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time in 52 years - earning himself in the process the Manager of The Year Award from the League Managers Association. He was replaced at the Cardiff City Stadium by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in January 2014.

Mackay has not managed a game at the DW Stadium before, but has played there for both Norwich City and Watford. Norwich drew 1-1 in the Championship in October 2003, while Watford were defeated 3-0 after extra time in the Carling Cup in 2005 (part of the run to the final) before drawing 1-1 in the Barclays Premiership in September 2006.

Three members of the current squad have played under him, Don Cowie, Andrew Taylor and Leon Barnett.

A club with no morals, hope he sends them down.

Although knowing some of our fans they will prob want them to do well to prove some kind of strange point to Tan. Id prefer Slade to Malky and thats saying something.

Good luck to him, apart from Feb 24.

He made a mistake, but deserves a second chance.

Be interesting to see how Tan reacts...rumours are that there was more bad news held by the club about Moody and Tan...Wonder what will happen when Mackay drops a black player from the team in Wigan, or if Mackay makes a harmless joke that gets overheard...I think he still has a long road to walk.

Cowie must be ecstatic guaranteed place in the line up for him

Is moody going there too?

Be even more gobsmacked if Moody went there, but one thing I seem to recall is Whelan's distaste for Vincent Tan

Coincidence?? :?

So Wigan conduct their own investigation on Malky Mackay's transfer dealings and decide to go ahead with offering him the job. Further proof Tan is full of it!

Couldn't agree more. I will await for Tan to start investigating Slade's transfer dealings this coming January.

Some of our fans would rather see Wigan do well rather than us, just because they hate Tan!

Sadly, Cal, some people just don't want to move on and actually take pleasure from all of this!

Two of the Chief Protagonists have (not unexpectedly) surfaced above! ;) :(

Wonder what Mr Tan will do now, so far Malkay has not been charged, so their no solid proof he did what he did, until the FA come out and say something.

Good appointment for Wigan Athletic, hope he goes well.

Brave decision by Whelan, the press will be looking for stories there from now on, he will have to be very careful when speaking to the press.......

As for Tan, if he has anymore, I am pretty sure we will find out in the next few weeks, I don't think he will let things rest......

I don't really care one way or another if Malky works or not if I'm honest. I don't believe that he deserves a second chance, why should he, when there are so many other managers out there who have done nothing wrong? He managed our club to promotion, playing some of the most negative and uninspiring football I have seen. It all went sour and he dug in and thought of his own self preservation rather than the damage it was doing to our club and any chances of staying up.

He has Racist, Sexist and homophobic thoughts which he is stupid or arrogant enough to express in emails and texts with colleagues. He is now described as an honourable man :laughing6: Only in football, are people willing to overlook anything unsavoury, as long as they feel it gives them a chance of winning  I am hugely disappointed with Dave whellan, who I have always respected and thought he was morally and ethically different from most owners out there. I don't believe it will work out for Malky up there, because I think that a lot of this will come to bite him on the bum, footballers and supporters look for anything to blame when things aren't going well and this will make him an easy target.

Funny how so many people jump to the moral high ground. like none of you have ever laughed at a racist or sexist joke or sent/received a rude text.

His sacking was justified but I hope he takes them up so tan eats his word
