Trinidad and Tobago international Jones' anti-violence campaign comes after the shooting deaths of Deshon and Trevon Sobers

Cardiff City striker Kenwyne Jones has opened up for the first time on his heartache at the brutal killing of his two cousins in his native Trinidad and Tobago.

The international player’s cousins Deshon, 21 and her brother Trevon “Chibbi” Sobers, 24, were killed last month when a man allegedly went on a shooting rampage at their home in Chaguanas.

Jones’ uncle, Glenford Sobers, 73, was also badly hurt in the incident.

A suspect has been charged in connection with the killings.

Meanwhile the Bluebirds star, who flew back to the Caribbean in the wake of the deaths, has now launched a campaign against escalating violence in his home country.

Earlier this month, the 30-year-old who has scored six times for Cardiff City this season, paid tribute to his late cousins by removing his club shirt after scoring Cardiff’s third goal in the 3-1 win against Leeds revealing a T-shirt bearing the words: “RIP Deshon and Chibbi.”

The game was played on the day his cousins were buried.

Jones has now launched an initiative in Trinidad and Tobago, Kenwyne 3.0, which aims to shift the focus of young people away from crime.

He added that after his retirement he plans to spend more time there and to become a role model for youngsters.

Speaking to a leading Trinidad and Tobago newspaper, he said: “To be honest the situation is very unfortunate and I’d like to send my love to my family. Crime is a major factor.

“It affects the whole country but of course like everyone else when it hits home it seems a little more serious.

“It’s easy for the youths to say this is what I’m born in and this is what I see everyday, so I’m going to be a statistic. But, no! We need to find ways to get them away from that thinking.”

The third child of a family of eight born in Trinidad and Tobago’s Point Fortin, Jones added: “I like to help people in whichever way I can. I’m not saying it has to be monetary.

“Sometimes, some people just need little words of advice.

“I’ve been in a group of youngsters trying to fight for the same dream and was blessed to be one out of the many that made it, one of the many that actually made the dream a reality.”

Jones is now planning a Christmas event for Point Fortin children in need of support.

News of the campaign launch came as the striker led his Trinidad and Tobago team-mates in a boycott of Tuesday’s Caribbean Cup final following a pay row.

Would be a great gesture if the fans could back him Friday night, whether it's a banner or minutes applause. Anyone agree?

anything sounds good. as long as everybody knows beforehand

even just a chorus of ♫we love you kenwyne we do♫ would be better than nothing. Hard times for him and good for us that he's come back so soon.
