Ched Evans 'cannot go back to football' Carwyn Jones says

14 November 2014

The first minister said Evans was a role model who had not apologised

Welsh footballer Ched Evans "cannot go back" to playing the game after his rape conviction, First Minister Carwyn Jones has said.

Sheffield United are to allow ex-Wales star Evans, 25, to train with them.

Evans was freed last month after serving half of a five-year jail sentence and maintains he is innocent.

Olympic medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill says she wants her name removed from one of the stands at United's Bramall Lane home if Evans is given a contract.

Three club patrons have also resigned while one of United's sponsors has said it will end its association with the club if they re-sign Evans.

Speaking on the BBC's Question Time, Mr Jones said Evans had not apologised to his victim.

He said: "What does it mean for her to see him back in a job where he will earn a lot of money after being a convicted rapist?

Ched Evans was given a five year jail sentence in April 2012Ched Evans was given a five year jail sentence in April 2012
"If you are a role model and you are convicted of a serious offence such as rape, and you don't apologise at the very least, you don't say you accept that you committed a serious offence, you can't go back to a job like football."

Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood, a former probation officer, said: "I think there is a danger of sending a message to young people who look at footballers as role models, there is a danger that we send a message that rape isn't a serious offence."

Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Kirsty Williams said she would feel "incredibly uncomfortable" if Evans were ever to play for Wales again.

But journalist and columnist Rod Liddle, also on the panel, said it would be "politically-correct hypocrisy" to prevent Evans from playing football.

"There are countless footballers plying their trade - most of them in the lower divisions - who have been convicted of various offences which are egregious and some of them have caused people to lose their lives," said Mr Liddle, associate editor of The Spectator magazine.

"Are you saying that rape is something ... worse than killing someone? That there is one exception to made for this one offence?"

During the programme in Cardiff, the first minister also gave his backing to Labour leader Ed Miliband, who has been under pressure to improve the party's poll ratings with the general election six months away.

He said Mr Miliband's speech on Thursday had been "fantastic".

"We've got an election in May, and we need to win it for the good of the people of this country," said Mr Jones. "Let's be positive."

I watched Question Time in Cardiff last night and Rod Liddle made some good points.

He said there are footballers playing today in the lower leagues who have killed people but are playing the game.

Exactly Carl. There are a lot worse being allowed to play.

Chen Evans is still claiming he is innocent and while he is doing that why should he apologise.......just like some players playing after wrong doings there are also lots of people accused and convicted of things that they did not do!!!! That said.....he's done his time and paid his penance so no apology required!!!

All these twats speaking up now having their say so are just seeking attention. Deep down they couldn't give a shit. His trial did seem a bit inconclusive . He should volunteer to a lie detector test.

She couldn't even remember what happened! Yet Ched was convicted with rape while his mate gets away with it, despite them both being in the same room with her! Either they are both guilty or neither of them are guilty! The fact his mate Clayton McDonald, a lower league player not on a huge salary was innocent, while Ched was deemed guilty despite them both being in the same room suggests Ched has been made an example of to me! Let's pick on the higher profile one earning a big salary and make an example out of him! Jessica Ennis, Charlie Webster and the rest of the manipulated morons jumping on the bandwagon should study the facts first! The sooner he's back playing football for club and country, the better!

People say but he hasn't apologised and yes that's a fair comment but he still maintains his innocence and is appealing. If he apologises then that's an admission of guilt. If he truly is guilty then he should never play again. But I got that feeling he is innocent. Not saying he ain't a horrible little Kent but being a horrible Kent don't make him a rapist. That girl sounds she has the same morals as Evans but found a way out of explaining to her boyfriend.

Anyone who describes any of Ed MilliCleggs speeches as fantastic, is clearly an incorrigible tool.

Was Jessica Ennis a blades legend?

Re: ' CANNOT GO BACK '

Now before anyone says so I am not condoning rape in any way

But the only reason this is getting so much media attention is cos he is a footballer, whilst I appreciate he is in the limelight and somewhat a role model he has served his sentence guilty or not and should be allowed to rehabilitated just like any other convicted rapist again whether guilty or not should also be rehabilitated and allowed to go back to whatever they do to earn a living

Whilst I appreciate that the victim may see him playing and think how should he continue to earn so much that is not his fault that's his profession and he should be allowed to continue with it just like any other convicted fellon can after serving their sentence

The sheer fact that this is getting so much media attention is surely making this ordeal for the victim far worse than if he just went back to playing lower league football without any damning headlines but this is the sad world we live in where the media runs things

Now the do gooders and jumping on the band wagon saying he should never play again and this has absolutely nothing to do with morals or because what he was convicted of was a horrid crime it's purely cos he can still go onto earn a lot of money if he was joe blogs convicted rapist now going back to being a dustbin man then would the do gooders have anything to say or would the media jump all over it??

No it's pure hypocrisy

I belive the media should put this subject to bed and let him get on with things if a club so happens to employ him then that's their choice he knows the stick etc he will get and that's his choice also to play and the media should also be quiet to protect the victim and not continue to make her relive her ordeal daily with this witch hunt against a man that has served his sentence according to the British judicial systems requirements

"He said: "What does it mean for her to see him back in a job where he will earn a lot of money after being a convicted rapist?"

what does money have to do with it?

is he never allowed to earn good money ever again?

what a poor argument from that buffoon.

Like it or not the guy is a convicted rapist, tried and convicted in court by a jury.
Unless the conviction is overturned he will quite rightly find it impossible to find work in his chosen profession. Public opinion and the influence of sponsors etc will see to that. Professional footballers are, rightly or wrongly, held up as role models for the younger generation. They simply can't afford to step out of line these days.
There are many professions where convicted criminals are stopped from going back to their previous job. Would you want all professions to allow convicted rapists back to work?

With you on this, quite brave as some of them on question time seemed to be worried they will say something that will get taken out of context and they'll get disliked.

He stuck to his guns, was honest and said how it was.

Carwyn Jones mentioned the fact Ched never apologised and because he was convicted of it that means Ched actually done it, what a bell piece.
