Cardiff City went to Bolton in search of their first away win of the season but were sent home on the end of a 3-0 drubbing on a night when they hardly got a shot of note on target.
City suffered more misery on the road. This time at Bolton
Bolton Wanderers 3-0 Cardiff City
Cardiff City have tried eight times to win away in the Championship this season - and failed eight times.
They travelled to Bolton’s Macron Stadium with a lot of hope following their 3-1 home win against Leeds, but once again Cardiff City fell some way below their best as Bolton inflicted their worst Championship defeat of the season.
The home team are battling against relegation, but they were by far the better side during the first half. City improved after half-time, but that was the least travelling fans could have expected. They could not, though, force their way back into the match.
Bolton were in command by half-time thanks to two goals by Liam Feeney, scored after nine minutes and 36 minutes. Captain Matt Mills added a third Bolton goal after 76 minutes.
The home team played reasonably well, but the Bluebirds struggled badly. They defended poorly with Brayford, Manga, Sean Morrison and Fabio all below their best.
City’s defending before both goals was poor and former Swansea City player Darren Pratley had a hand in setting up both and Bolton really didn’t have to work hard enough to score.
Ravel Morrison was sent on for Joe Ralls after half-time and played just behind front two Federico Macheda and Adam Le Fondre. It was an attacking move in a bid to retrieve something from the game.
Almost 400 City fans travelled to Bolton and they were given little to cheer during a drab match.
Bolton’s third goal, after 76 minutes, came when Max Clayton pulled the ball back for Mills, who failed to connect properly with his shot. But the mishit effort flew past keeper Marshall and into the corner.
None of the Cardiff players rated better than 6/10 with Fabio just given the vote as man of the match.
But none of the City players can reflect on this with any satisfaction.
