Leeds Red Bull

Tue Nov 04, 2014 7:47 am

Red bull want to take over Leeds apparently and buy them off Cellini and he is listening to the offer.
Be interesting to see how it pans out, would it make Leeds a force under red bull with their money?
How rich would it make them?
Would they change the name?
It could be a situation like ours, red bull say if you change the name to Leeds Red Bull then we will come in and invest in the club, if you won't accept the name change we will not invest, do you think Leeds fans would go for it?

Keep red.bull out of the british game

I'm surprised this is still going ahead.

I thought the FA had clamped down on name changes making it a no go area.

Didn't red bull change completely the name of a club and their colours in Europe couple yes ago? Austria??

Yes they did Salzburg I think.

A new team was formed from the disgruntled fans and they called themselves FC Saltzburg or some thing like that.

Saltzburg Red Bull went on to win the Austrian league for several seasons while FC Saltzburg started in the bottom tier and are now a few leagues higher.

Just reading the wiki Ian, yeah the club was totally re-branded and some supporters formed SV Austria Salzburg as a result.

Red Bull have taken over several clubs, Salzburg, Leipzig, New York, a Brazilian club I can't remember the name of, then it's of course the F1 teams. The Red Bull team in F1 used to be Jaguar and they've also taken over the Toro Rosso team. Red Bull are a cancer to sport, taking over teams and killing identities. Keep them out of the British game, we all dislike Leeds but I wouldn't wish any fans to go through what Tan has put us through, including Leeds.

Totally agree TB but money talks.

The FA have stopped the Hull owner from changing the name. However that was Hull and some foreign owner so it is no problem. This is Leeds and one huge international magnate. I would not be surprised if the FA do a U turn.

I agree and if the FA do a U turn to allow this, the game will be finished off for good imo. Sadly like you say, money talks. :(

You clearly don't know about Motorsport then as teams get taken over and changed all the time. Personally I think their inclusion has been good for F1

How many people do you think would know Red Bull was the Jaguar team without looking it up? I had to look it up as I had no idea! If Red Bull tried buying a team with a fanatical fan base like Ferrari, there would be uproar. Every team has their own unique colours, Ferrari have always been red, McLaren have always been white and red, Williams have always been blue and white and Jaguar were green. Red Bull took over Jaguar and rebranded them, just like Tan did to our club. The fact it's a different sport is irrelevant. If you honestly think the fanatical Ferrari F1 fans would just sit back and allow Red Bull to take over their team, change their team name and rebrand them into the Red Bull colours, then it's you who clearly doesn't know about Motorsport.

Also you go on about Jaguer as if they have always been in F1 yet Jaguer racing only completed in F1 between 2000-2004 and they brought Jackie Stewarts team in 1999 so as I say teams change all the time in F1 mainly because of financial reasons. Only recently two teams have gone into admin because of financial pressures so its nothing new

Re: Leeds Red Bull

Tue Nov 04, 2014 8:23 pm

Tonteg you obviously aren't that knowledgable about F1. McLaren's traditional colours are actually orange, but "rebranded" to red and white for Marlboro sponsorship. They then later changed again to silver/grey for West sponsorship.

Williams have been all sorts of colours too.

Jaguar themselves took over a team after they bought Stewart Grand Prix in 1999. They then announced that they were pulling out of the sport in 2004... So it wasn't a factor of "rebranding" - if they didn't take over, there would be no team and massive job losses.

The example you give about Ferrari is totally different and an unfair comparison. Red Bull only stepped in when Jaguar announced they were leaving. Before that, Red Bull sponsored the Sauber & Arrows teams & certainly didn't rebrand them.

As for the fan base. The only team that has a fanatical fan base, is the Ferrari team. The Tifosi (Ferrari fans) wouldn't allow a rebrand, you're right... But they are the only team that has such a fan base. You'll find the vast majority of fans follow a driver, rather than a team & because of that, a teams identity and colours don't feature in importance as it does football.
