LEASED CARS

Anyone got one?

Been looking into it and it seems to me the deal is you pay a monthly fee but are not allowed to drive it. Most deals I see only allow me to go to the corner shop else after that its going to cost me a lot more than what is advertised.

Dont understand leased cars, its chucking money away. Its 7k a year for a Range Rover. Better to buy a banger for 1k and save what you would spend on the lease for 5-6 years and then buy one that you can eventually sell if you wish.

After 2 years you hand the car back or you may get an offer to extend the lease or even buy the car.
£4100 may seem a lot if you dont have a car at the end of it but think how much you would lose if you bought the car from new and sold it after 2 years, not to mention the hassle of actually selling it or the ridiculous trade in you may be offered against a new car.
Swings and roundabouts, it works for some but not for others.

Exactly the reasons why I am looking at a lease. Plus it is a tax offset for me.

Must admit I've bought a couple of bangers and they have performed a lot better than a new car I had. However with a lease one I wont have that problem.

7 years of leasing a Land Rover and you would be about 40k down with no car. If you decide to lease rather than but for the rest of your life (40 years say) on that same premise then you would be 250k down with no car.

If someone wants a flash car short term to impress someone then i understand it but i just cant fathom long term leases. Lots of people do it too.

I don't think the idea is to lease forever.. I think the point they are making is that if you bought a new car it would depreciate in value more over the time of the period you would have leased for than the cost of the lease.. therfore you lose less money? Add also the fact that if you were offered the option of buying the car at the end of the lease, it would cost the same as buying a 2 year old car, knowing the exact history of it because you were the one who drove it!!

The point being though, a car will only depreciate so much - while the amount you will lose is capped by the value of the car. Where as by leasing, you are guaranteeing depreciating your car by 5k a year to a point where you will lose maybe 6 times the value of the car, there is no cap on losses, in fact its limitless losses.

If you buy brand new without fail every 2 years then fair enough its probably cost effective. But who really does that? Footballers and people who can afford that kind of lifestyle id assume. For normal working folk then its chucking cash down the drain.

Ian, have you looked at Options wit Ford. Its similar to leasing, you pay monthly and dont have to put a deposit, and the contract is for 24 mths but you can change the vehicle before this time.

I use it and change my cars every 9 mths, works for me.

Cheers Nobby that worthwhile exploring.

The simple fact is that we only ever 'lease' cars in reality...

We buy them, we run them, we service them, they lose value, they become less reliable and more expensive to repair, then we sell them and we get another one!

When the figures are done, it can appear that 'leasing' is more expensive but there are many positives to be had...

Vehicles are always 'up-to-date', will usually be more economical, will include service packages, should be problem free and can be handed back at the end of the agreement with no hassle other than deciding "What to get next?"

Some pretty good deals out there, if a 'lease' scheme suits you and I guess it all depends on what any individual can afford (or wants) to pay!

I do the same. Bought new fiesta zetec s last year, will be changing next year hoping to get the ST, the ford options are brilliant but are not everyone's cuppa tea

I was looking into a deal/lease like this but don't you get charged a substantial amount extra if you go over the stipulated mileage & any damage to the bodywork you have to pay for the repairs at the end of the lease.

14p a mile over the limit. 10,000 will do me but initially I was reading 6,000. I work out that would be an extra £70 a month for my needs if I signed for that low limit.

On ford options you can have the contract on 6000 miles per annum and as long as you change the car within 24 mths you will not be penalised for going over. I always do it.
