' Lots of work ahead '

Sat Oct 25, 2014 2:02 pm

We were useless and couldn't string any passes together until we woke up towards the end. Gunnarsson going off was a massive blow, Millwall's centre midfielder ran through from deep with Whittingham unable to track him several times. That wouldn't have happened if Gunnarsson was still on the pitch. Ralls isn't good enough and I don't think he will ever be good enough sadly. We are lacking strength in depth in centre midfield which is incredible considering the number of centre midfielders Ole brought in. I also thought we massively missed Kenwyne as it was a scrappy game and Kenwyne would have taken the knocks and given us a focal point to build attacks, plus he would have handled Shittu's physicality. I don't think we would have conceded the goal if Kenwyne was marking Shittu instead of Macheda either (who make no bones about it, bottled out of putting in a challenge when he saw Shittu attacking the ball).

However, the referee was pathetic, Marshall was clearly impeded/blocked off/knocked over to stop him claiming the cross for their goal. You can say Marshall should have been bigger/stronger all you like and yes, Marshall should have been stronger; but McDonald clearly obstructed Marshall and it was a definite foul. We regularly had goals disallowed in the past when Gunnarsson did the same thing to the oppositions keeper, the lack of consistency with decisions is frustrating. Millwall were more streetwise than us and we lacked the guts and character to compete today. But little decisions went to Millwall all game.

The ball bounces up and strikes Brayford on the arm early in the first half and it's a free kick, when the same thing happens with Shittu late on, no penalty is given. Shittu climbs all over Le Fondre in the second half and it's play on, then a free kick is given to Millwall for an offense nowhere near as bad as Shittu's seconds earlier. The referee barely gave us a thing and Pilkington in particular lost his cool with frustration, the frustration caused by the referee didn't help us. The commentators bias to Millwall was also very disappointing. But what I couldn't accept today was the fact we allowed the poor decisions to get to us. We didn't get on with the game and keep battling, we felt sorry for ourselves and threw the towel in. That I cannot accept and I'm sure Slade won't accept this either. I've seen many already correctly moaning about the amount of long balls and lack of football we played today, but you must win the battle to earn the right to play. We didn't do this.

Slade has inherited this squad and it's still a squad without the required guts, fight, passion, spirit and mental strength to go to a physical, no nonsense, streetwise Millwall outfit, stand up to them and battle for a result. Millwall wanted it more than us and sadly, we will throw away many more points with our current squad, simply because other squads currently have more character than ours. It's not Slade's fault as this isn't his squad. Give Slade time and a few transfer windows because that's the time he will need to offload the bottlers within our squad and transform our squad into a squad capable of getting results at places like Millwall today.

Your right TB, but your post reminds me of one of those posts written just after one of those play of eliminator games during Dave Jones tenure,,,,,get rid of the bottlers.

We have gone massively backwards as a football club,,,Massively!!!

Sadly you're spot on. On paper, our talented squad should be going to an average Millwall team and turning them over 2 or 3 nil. But football isn't played on paper and you need so much more than ability alone to be able to win football matches.

Joe ralls def not good enough.... He's not strong enough in the challenge...

We really need a commanding centre midfielder. Losing gunnarsson was a huge blow.

without getting bogged down with formations and tactics, the main concern is are the players any better than other Championship clubs..??

Ole is to blame sadly, Dalman and Tan set the club back years employing him.

Well sentenced Thomas.

Dalman should be shown the door here as Ole was his choice and it was all judged on his passion for Man Utd. I hope Dalman does what he does best and find those investors who will see the end of this Malaysian reign. Lets pray he stays away from the footballing matters.
