Leaving a man upfield at corners

Sat Oct 18, 2014 6:33 pm

It was refreshing to see that Le Fondre was left on the halfway line when we were defending corners in the second half.

We've not seen that since the Dave Jones era!

Not only did it tie up two of their players but towards the end, we cleared a corner and instead of it coming straight back at us, Le Fondre managed to cause enough of a nuisance of himself that we actually won a throw-in by halfway, immediately releasing the pressure on the defence.

I thought Le fondre made a real nuisance of himself as well. He done a good job at it and alleviated a lot of pressure.

This was the Le Fondre I thought we were signing - a constant thorn in the side of the opposition. It's like having a new player! :ayatollah:

Refreshing to watch yesterday, good shape, like you say leaving one up for corners make sense and really good to see Le Fondre playing where he should be and seemed a happier chap doing well.

What a refreshing change to see this happen. It has been driving me mad for years and it has resulting in us inviting continued pressure on our defence over past few seasons. Makes no sense whatsoever. Great to see us playing further up pitch yday and instinctively attacking instead of turning great positions on pitch whether open play or throw in going back to our keeper for him to hoof it up field. Not rocket science that if you keep ball in opposition half less likely to concede and more likely to score. Let's hope it continues and maybe just maybe we can break out and attack others from there corners with pace as others have done to us the past few seasons and boro did to score vs us recently. Fingers crossed. Personally I would utilise nooner up there with his pace to attack others, although le fonder did great holding it up yday :bluescarf: :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

I understand your point about Noone at corners but ALF is a proper striker and makes the most of scraps which possibly Nooney wouldn't think to do?

Anyhow much better yesterday we were sharp until the injuries affected the shape

It's riled me for the last few seasons, agree it was a breath of fresh air
How Malky & Ole didn't understand that one of our players kept two of theirs out of our box??

I Posted this yesterday - Agree 100% - We have watched for the last few seasons 11 men defending corners.
When we should have had 1 up top for the ball which goes out - even if WE WENT UP UNDER MM :bluescarf:
