Cardiff City 2-1 Nottingham Forest: Match report

“I had told them before the game if you want to be successful at anything, you have to give everything.”

“And it's definitely a start. I was looking at the first 90 minutes and wanted to go from there, build up the bricks and get that momentum.

“We haven't written anything off. This has given us a platform.”

Cardiff still remain some way off the top places in the Championship and both supporters and Slade will be wary of getting carried away after an impressive and far more organised first-half led to a far tougher second-half as Forest threatened a comeback.

But while Slade says he expects more from his new team going forward, including against Ipswich on Tuesday, he insisted the first 45 minutes was a glimpse of how he wants the Bluebirds to be under his instructions.

“I was really pleased with what I saw in the first-half,” Slade said. “We looked a threat going forward, we created a few opportunities and I was happy with the structure of the team where we looked nice and compact without the ball.

“We had some enforced changes which didn't help but we hung on in there. In the second-half there was not so much football going forward and it was disappointing to concede a goal but we got there.

“But we knew Forest were going to come at us because they had been unbeaten for a reason and I can be delighted with the attitude.

“We needed to see we had the belief to win the game and to be able to trust each other. That was important for me.

“And I saw things that really pleased, like players filling in for each other when they lost their position. Or when a ball was thrown forward and Le Fondre chased a lost cause, got a throw-in and we scored from it. That's a fine line which can help momentum tip your way.

“We knew the second-half was going to hurt but when you build-up that togetherness you'll see players go beyond the call of duty. That's what I want.”

Slade admitted Fabio had to be withdrawn at the last minute after being struck by illness during the warm-up while Declan John was not risked from the bench after complaining of a tight hamstring and Tom Adeyemi will be assessed after lasting just two minutes after replacing Aaron Gunnarson before he suffered his own hamstring strain. Ravel Morrison was not considered after issues resulting from a knee problem

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade hails team's work rate

By Mark Langshaw, Reporter

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade has praised his side's work rate during their 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest in the Championship.

Goals from Federico Macheda and Peter Whittingham inflicted a first defeat on Forest, and the Bluebirds boss described the win as "a great result for the football club".

Sky Sports News quotes him as saying: "The players worked exceptionally hard. I hope people saw a bit of a difference today and a bit of a structure and a game plan which we can develop going forward.

"The first half was really pleasing. We looked a threat going forward, we created a few opportunities and we were nice and compact without the ball.

"We hung on in there well during the last few minutes, which were a bit scary, and it is a great result for the football club."

The second half wouldn't have hurt so much if we managed to keep possession of the football for more than two passes at a time.

Good 3 points but plenty of work still needed.

Hopefully Slade will get it right.

Slade is getting on my good side quickly, I was as nervous as anyone when we signed him but Tan could've pulled a master stroke.

he's like a perfect cross between our last three managers - the formation and play style of dave jones, the work ethic of Malky and the cheeriness and fan friendliness of Ole.

I don't have a doubt that he'll do well in this league, he's ready and he's promoted staff who already know the Cardiff way and they're coaching well and are hungry. My only concern now is if we do get promoted, will he be able to adapt and handle the prem?
