Was in Greece in 1993, just about the time Yugoslavia was disintegrating. There were huge demonstrations against the new state being called Macedonia. The Greeks seemed to think that the new state would lay claim to the greek region of the same name. The Greek army was on full alert along the border. Finally ended up with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia!
Very volatile part of the world. Only Marshall Tito kept Yugoslavia together, and peaceful.
Always had a decent national football team.
