' Wales latest Fifa Ranking '

Wales will be no lower than 35th at the end of this weeks fixtures, the best Wales can be this weekend is 31st in the Fifa rankings.

Wales have gone above Scotland, though Scotland play in Poland tonight. A Scotland win leaves Wales below them.

The winners of the Tunisia v Senegal match will go above Wales. A draw would mean Wales stay above both.

Iceland have gone above Wales, and the winners of Serbia v Albania will also go above Wales. A draw keeps Wales above both.

Austria go above Wales due to their wins over Moldova and Montenegro.

Slovakia go above Wales following wins over Spain and Belarus.

The Cape Verde Islands will go level with Wales if they beat Mozambique.

If Guinea get an unlikely win in Ghana, they will go above Wales.

Wales are currently above Cameroon, but if they win tonight they go above Wales.

So, Wales will be no lower than 35th (joint with Cape Verde Islands) at the end of these fixtures. The best Wales can hope for is 31st.

I think it's due to the staggered nature of fixtures. Many countries haven't yet played as many ges as us but will do soon. It's a minefield!!

I only pay attention to where we are compared to European teams for the seeding.

It's all just "looks good on paper", would rather be top of our group than higher in the rankings.

I realy enjoyed my week in Cape Verde.I had a look at the stadium on the island of Sal.It looked semi derelict from the outside. Was'nt alowed inside. The people are very friendly'and nuts on Bob Marley. And the best of all.The coppers dont carry guns.Very little crime.

I remember once upon a time ago we used to be 104 in the world and around 69 was our very highest, so to be in the top 30 area isn't a bad achievement. Wonder if we'll finally be able to support Wales in a major tournament? Never thought that would happen in my life time :ayatollah:

The FIFA rankings works on a 4 year cycle.

Points are won for a draw or victory, more points for a result in qualifying or a tournament and more if it's against a team ranked higher.

Total points for 3 years ago (2011), 2 years ago (2012), last year (2013) and this year are added up and divided by the amount of game to get an average.

They then get multiplied by a % which is lower the further back in time:
2011 - 20%
2012 - 30%
2013 - 50%
2014 (current season) - 100%

Add those 4 numbers up and that is the current total.

Because the ranking work on a cycle of 4 years it constantly changes, hence a win and draw now adds to the 2014 points BUT results from 2011 'drop out' of the 4 year cycle so we (as everyone does) 'lose' points too.

The fact we were awful in the last 4 years is why we are suddenly rising (or have risen) from 100+ to 29th in a short space of time. We win games to get points and basically defeats drop out the other end as we were rubbish in 2011.

The challenge will be to maintain the current rate of points long enough to hopefully get in to pot 2 for a future qualifying competition.
