Points are won for a draw or victory, more points for a result in qualifying or a tournament and more if it's against a team ranked higher.
Total points for 3 years ago (2011), 2 years ago (2012), last year (2013) and this year are added up and divided by the amount of game to get an average.
They then get multiplied by a % which is lower the further back in time:
2011 - 20%
2012 - 30%
2013 - 50%
2014 (current season) - 100%
Add those 4 numbers up and that is the current total.
Because the ranking work on a cycle of 4 years it constantly changes, hence a win and draw now adds to the 2014 points BUT results from 2011 'drop out' of the 4 year cycle so we (as everyone does) 'lose' points too.
The fact we were awful in the last 4 years is why we are suddenly rising (or have risen) from 100+ to 29th in a short space of time. We win games to get points and basically defeats drop out the other end as we were rubbish in 2011.
The challenge will be to maintain the current rate of points long enough to hopefully get in to pot 2 for a future qualifying competition.
