Wojciech Szczesny was relieved Arsenal didn’t sign Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall during the summer as he feared he would lose his place in Arsene Wenger’s team.

The Gunners were linked with a £15million move for the Scottish international but they eventually opted to sign Colombia’s David Ospina from Nice instead.
Szczesny has kept hold of the No 1 jersey following Ospina’s arrival at the Emirates, but he reckons it could have been a different story if the “absolutely incredible” Marshall had joined the club.
“I heard rumours last season [Marshall] was going to sign for Arsenal so I definitely wasn’t looking forward to that happening,” Szczesny said as he prepares to face Marshall in Poland’s Euro qualifier against Scotland on Wednesday.
“He’s been absolutely incredible and was one of the best
goalkeepers in the Premier League last season. So I was worried he would take my place if he joined us.
“David is a top keeper so as much as you want competition, when I heard him linked with us I was like, ‘Woooh, calm down, we don’t need to sign anyone that good’.
“But he deserves a move to the Premier League as he’s been terrific.”
