RUSSELL SLADE TODAY BEING INTERVIEWED

Tuesday 7th Oct 2014

Simon Gaskell
Did you seek advice from people what Tan was like?

Yes. Everyone does their homework. I’m sure there was plenty done on me and I did my own.

The owner fallen out with others previously. Where do you think you can succeed where others have failed?

Communication is a big thing. To keep the owner and hierarchy informed of my opinion and where the club should go between us. He wants that. It is going back to old values.

Simon Gaskell
How do you assess the squad?

We’re lacking physical and mental strength. One or two, like Noone, are behind in fitness and we need to give the group mental strength on the football pitch and every day in training.

Simon Gaskell
Is Glenn Roeder going to be director of football?

I’ve met him at the Brighton game and I know he’s watched a few games. Whether that role becomes permanent I don’t know.

If the owner wanted to suggest that, that’s something we would discuss. To be honest I don’t think that’s something that will be happening going forward.

Simon Gaskell
What did you make of the Malky Mackay line in last night's statement?

I’ve never looked over my shoulder in my life. I can’t affect the past, only the now and going forward. I can’t control that situation or any others that have been driven but I do now have opportunity to control what happens here.

Simon Gaskell
You are eight points off the play-offs. Is that a gap you can make up?

All things are possible. There’s no doubt about that. This group needs momentum and confidence. We need to build bricks, build from a solid foundation. Performances will give us a bit of momentum.

Simon Gaskell
Vincent Tan says he may invest elsewhere? Is he interested in being here?

His heart is very much in Cardiff City. He wants club to be successful, of that there is no doubt in my mind. His desire and ambition is for this club to be successful.

Simon Gaskell
Does Tan feel shortchanged?

I do. There’s no point denying it or hiding from fact. The players are well paid and we are under-achieving at this moment in time. There are good people in group. I’ve had one on one conversations and there is a good nucleus of players. There will be little tweaks to be made along way as I try to put my stamp on it.

Simon Gaskell
Is there money available?

Of course. We have a rich owner but he wants value for money. For me to inherit 31 players and a few out on loan is too many so there is some wheeling and dealing to be done. I’m getting my little list of players that may help. We would have to wait in long time for January window and in the short term there could be the odd loan.

Simon Gaskell
Do the background issues at the club concern you?

It’s all about dealing with them before they arise if you can. Communication between hierarchy and the manager is vitally important and I will emphasise that.

Simon Gaskell
How do Tan and Barry Hearn compare?

They are both big characters, that’s for sure. My relationship with Barry was open, honest and trustworthy. He let me get on with running his football club. These are discussions I will be having with Mr Tan.

Simon Gaskell
Will he interfere in team selection?

He’s openly come out about that. He’s entitled to opinion but it will be me picking team

Simon Gaskell
What do you make of Vincent Tan?

I have had honest conversations with him. He wants value for money now. He’s put a lot of money in and wants real value for it. We’re going to roll our sleeves up, work hard and provide that.

Simon Gaskell
Will Scott Young be your assistant?

Scott will be a big part of what we are doing. He remains with me as assistant at first team level and the rest we will look at. We need to organise that. Talks are ongoing. I’m meeting the owner this evening to go through it in detail. It’s a big squad, arguably too big. There might be some wheeling and dealing in short term

Simon Gaskell
What is your ethos?

Work ethic, desire and togetherness so we are all pulling in the same direction. Those values to take on the pitch are important. Attacking football, going forward. I like to play two strikers up front with some variation. We were second highest goal scorers last season - clearly I like to get ball in the box and get opportunities.

Simon Gaskell
Will you have to win over fans?

Of course. Only thing that will do that is performance and winning matches.

Simon Gaskell
What is the difference in the Championship?

In terms of management I don’t see any difference. It is our fifths management and a fifth is coaching. We never stop learning and I have my own way of doing things now.

Simon Gaskell
Were you surprised to get the call?

To a certain extent but you are always looking for opportunities. I felt it was an excellent one and felt I had done my miles.

Simon Gaskell
Is Vincent Tan demanding?

He is but can see where we are at this moment in time.

Simon Gaskell
What is your aim?

To get as high up as possible and into the top six. We’ve got battle on our hands but still have 35 games to get in the shake-up.

Simon Gaskell
Slade reveals his contract is for two years. The rest of this season and next season

Simon Gaskell
Are you pleased to get into it? What has been delay?

The legal side. They refused permission and then turned down a further approach. Then they turned down my resignation. I had to work a seven day period which I have done now and compensation will revert to the contract which has now been agreed.

Not a lot you can disagree with there really.Let's hope he can do it.Not sure if it's blind optimism as a City fan, but I have a good feeling about this guy.

I'm happy he likes to play 2 strikers , Kenwynne is not suited as a lone striker

Me too, but I question whether we have the quality in midfield to play with 2 strikers. I hope Russell gets a couple of quality midfielders in on loan quickly!

Interesting that he emphasises the need for communication between the manager and owner and hierarchy, how many times did OGS and Dalman bang on about how good it was that trust and communication was now in place, now that the old regime was gone
Slade has also banged on about togetherness and direction a number of times. It all points to the owner, not being able to trust anyone, that in my opinion is why the club will never achieve success while he is at the club. Any togetherness will never be felt because the club have done pretty much everything to distance themselves from the supporters. All the best to Russell Slade, but he is onto a hiding to nothing I'm afraid.

ONLY THING I DISAGREED WITH HIM ON WAS HIS CHOICE OF TIE, TERRIBLE COLOUR

Good to see that he acknowledges the squad is too big, hopefully ship out 10 players and bring in one ore two quality players to slot into the key areas we have been lacking. :bluescarf:

I was underwhelmed by Slade's appointment but I will support him fully and hopefully he can do well at the club.

The one positive to come out of that for me was the mention of 2 strikers. Until now we lack a goal threat but agree with other posts that we need a decent midfield. Would like to see Ravel Morrison & Noone given plenty of game time along with Guerra & Le Fondre.

We could do with a bit more of a physical presence in the middle of the park. Someone in the same mold as Diame of Hull.

Hence the one ore two quality players to slot into the key areas we have been lacking.

I like the bit about a work ethic. Also that the well paid players are underachieving. Best of luck, Russell! :bluescarf:

Good answer. Excited to see how he plays the team. If we win against Forest, I'd be delighted. In fact, to draw would be fine considering our respective forms :P :ayatollah:

Let's hope he does well. I'm craving it!
The thing is words are easy. Also words are cheap. I remember Ole saying things very similar to this. Football on the deck, possession & fast flowing counter attacking football blah, blah, blah.
I take nothing from this interview. Only time will tell.
Good luck Russell, you'll need it.

All the best Russell Slade, wishing you all the success this club deserves. Still remindes me of big Al off Stella.

New Cardiff City manager Russell Slade charms and impresses on first day ...but now the real work begins

It was new Cardiff City boss Russell Slade’s boyhood hero Brian Clough who typically observed: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day, but I wasn’t on that particular job’.

It would be an exaggeration to suggest the Bluebirds’ new man has such an epic rebuilding task on his hands in the Welsh capital. Indeed, Slade’s first duty will be to sort the wheat from the chaff in the massive squad he has inherited, choose who to keep close, who to alienate and who to discard all together. Simple, one might think, but a challenge that has eluded those who preceded him.

But if Slade seemingly has the weapons to make an assault on his self-declared ambition of the Championship’s top-six places, then what is in short supply for him is time.

From the moment he walked into his first press conference officially as Cardiff manager, following one of the worst-kept secrets in football, Slade was being judged, being measured, his suitability for what remains one of the toughest jobs in British football being weighed up and debated.

In terms of the press anyway, the new Cardiff manager registered a success on his opening day. Apologising for his late arrival, both at the Vale Hotel and in the job itself, Slade was charming, self-deprecating and quick to make a joke. Indeed, if bonhomie put points on the board, the Bluebirds would be climbing the table already.

The problem for Slade is that his harshest critics are not to be found amongst the neutrality of the press benches, not yet anyway, but on the terraces themselves by those who love the club with a passion and who believe only the best will do for their true love.
