Sort the Midfield!

Mon Oct 06, 2014 4:56 pm

For me, Whittingham is the weak link. He's not consistent and not a threat from open play. People say how good he can be, but I don't see it enough to warrant his place, and he certainly doesn't put strikers through on goal with a split pass often enough or at all. He was found out in the PL!

He's not the weak link but the last 2 managers have been playing him too deep
He is not a defensive midfielder
This is the reason why he has 4 yellow cards
He is not a tackler and never has been
Put him in an attacking position and see the difference

whitts in a central midfield 2 won't work.
Gunnar isn't good enough for anything other than coming on from the bench.

If I was slade I'd be looking who is available to get in while ditching a load of squad players.

Totally agree and it's been clearly evident more so this season...

I really think our problem is we have no real captain and leader , and we let Hudson go thinking it would be easy to replace him ?........ You need a rock such as Hudson to build a side around and we are missing that rock and it shows

I'm a big Whitts fan & always have been.
I do, however, believe now is the time to give him a break from the first 11.
Saying that, it will be interesting to see if Slade does pick him because he's been virtually the first name on the team sheet with every manager here.
I think he will play him!

I'm convinced he'll play him, its the easy option. It reminds me years ago when PCs were beginning to get a foothold on the business market. The overwhelmingly dominant name was IBM because it had dominated the mainframe market previously. When the company began releasing their version of the PC it quickly became apparent that a number of newer, much smaller companies were releasing rival versions which were faster, more efficient and cheaper. However, these newer companies struggled to compete with IBM in sales volume because the business community in general were unsure of their credentials. The vast majority of middle managers, who were tasked with buying new PCs chose IBM because even though they knew other companies offered far more superior products at a better price, they felt they would not face too much criticism if it all went wrong because they made the safe and generally endorsed decision to choose IBM. The industry slogan at the time was "No one ever lost their job by buying IBM"

I think this is the Whittingham conundrum. We have never had a real quality manager down here, and given the massive fan loyalty to Whittingham, no one has felt secure enough to drop him gor long enough. Save perhaps for Malky in our promotion winning season, and that decision stopped the rot at the time and secured our winning the Championship
