CARDIFF CITY 2-1 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Attendance : 20,901

Scott Young and Danny Gabbidon claimed their first win as Cardiff City's joint caretaker managers with victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

With prospective new boss Russell Slade watching from the stands, Cardiff took the lead through Sean Morrison's firm first-half header.

Morrison then scored an own goal after the restart to pull Wednesday level.

But Anthony Pilkington's sharp volley secured Cardiff's first league win since August 19.

Victory came as a huge relief for Cardiff, whose recent poor form had led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure as manager.

The Bluebirds are still in negotiations with Leyton Orient about the appointment of Slade, who resigned from his post at Brisbane Road on Wednesday.

Young and Gabbidon have been placed in temporary charge while Cardiff wait to finalise a deal for Slade.

This was their third match in charge and, after a dismal 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, it was no surprise to see Gabbidon and Young make nine changes for the Owls' visit.

Wednesday had also been beaten heavily in midweek - 7-0 to Manchester City - but with that loss coming against the Premier League champions, Stuart Gray made only four changes to his side.

That was largely because Wednesday's league form had been markedly better than Cardiff's.

Russell Slade was an interested spectator at the Cardiff City Stadium. The 54-year old resigned as Leyton Orient manager on Wednesday and is expected to be appointed head coach at Cardiff.

With no wins in five Championship games, the Bluebirds had slipped to 16th in the table.

Sheffield Wednesday, by contrast, entered this match in the play-off places after two successive Championship victories.

They seemed buoyed by their recent good form as they made a bright start, Stevie May rounding Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall inside six minutes but having his shot cleared off the line by Fabio Da Silva.

It was not until 20 minutes later that Cardiff managed their first effort, as Aron Gunnarsson's header was well saved by a stretching Keiren Westwood before Kenwyne Jones volleyed his rebound over.

Westwood was powerless, however, to prevent Cardiff's opening goal. Peter Whittingham curled in an inviting free-kick and Morrison sent a powerful header into the net.

Morrison's first goal in a Cardiff shirt came just six minutes before half time. His second came three minutes after the restart - but for the wrong team.

Wednesday's Chris Maguire fizzed in a low cross from the right, prompting Morrison to slide in and inadvertently prod the ball beyond Marshall in the Bluebirds' goal.

The Owls' equaliser prompted a period of intense Cardiff pressure.

The hosts regained the lead shortly after the hour, as Jones nodded down to Pilkington, who juggled the ball deftly and volleyed in from 12 yards.

Cardiff substitute Federico Macheda had an injury-time goal ruled out for offside but, after a nervy last few minutes, Young and Gabbidon were merely thankful to hold on for a precious victory.

Report: Cardiff 2-1 Wednesday

Wednesday suffered their second defeat in four days as managerless Cardiff City inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Stuart Gray's troops in Wales on Saturday.

Sean Morrison was central to the match as he fired the Bluebirds ahead in the first half before scoring an own goal to get the visitors back on level terms after the restart.

Anthony Pilkington's volley ensured all three points for the hosts just after the hour mark as caretaker managers Scott Young and Danny Gabbidon took charge as caretaker managers.

The Owls were looking to bounce back from their 7-0 trouncing in the cup against Manchester City in midweek and Gray made a number of changes to his starting line-up. Kieren Westwood returned in goal while Atdhe Nuhiu replaced Gary Madine in attack.

Wednesday only managed one shot on target throughout the match as Cardiff were inspired by probable new manager Russell Slade, who sat in the stands for the contest.

Cardiff made nine changes to the side that lost 3-0 against Bournemouth in the cup and those changes had the desired impact.

Wednesday started the brighter, however, and could have taken an early lead when Stevie May rounded City goalkeeper David Marshal but saw his shot cleared away by Fabio Da Silva.

The Owls were comfortable in the opening stages but the Welsh side started to ease their way into the contest and Westwood was first tested when he saved Aron Gunnarsson's header after 20 minutes.

That lifted the hosts and they edged ahead six minutes before the break. Peter Whittingham swung in a typically dangerous free-kick and Morrison powered his header beyond Westwood.

The same player cancelled his side's lead out, however, just five minutes into the second half. Chris Maguire fizzed a teasing cross into the box and the Cardiff man slid the ball beyond Marshall and into the back of the net to get the Owls on level terms.

That did not prompt a spell of Wednesday pressure, however, as the hosts reacted well. Just ten minutes later their lead was restored when former Owl Kenwyne Jones headed into the path of Pilkington, who blasted what turned out to be the winner past Westwood.

Federico Macheda had a late goal chalked off for offside and Wednesday pushed for a late leveller but it never came.

Cardiff: Marshall, Brayford, Da Silva (Ralls 86), Manga, Whittingham, Jones (Macheda 67), Noone (R Morrison 63), Gunnarsson, Pilkington, Daehli, S Morrison.

Wednesday: Westwood, Palmer, Loovens, Buxton, Mattock, Maguire (Hope 67), Coke (Drenthe 67), Semedo (Madine 76), Maghoma, Nuhiu, May.

Cardiff City are back! The Media praise the Bluebirds for Sheffield Wednesday win as Russell Slade watches on

Sunday Sep 28, 2014

The media were full of praise for Cardiff City as manager-in-waiting Russell Slade watched them overcome the test of in-form Sheffield Wednesday. Here we take a look at what's being said today.

Cardiff City's Sean Morrison celebrates after scoring goal

WalesOnline

Cardiff City were back to somewhere near their best here again against a Sheffield Wednesday side who, unlike their hosts, have been enjoying a rather good start to the Championship campaign.

This was a first defeat on the road for Stuart Gray’s men and just as significantly a first win in six league outings for the Bluebirds themselves.

BBC Sport

Anthony Pilkington's sharp volley secured Cardiff's first league win since August 19.

Victory came as a huge relief for the hosts, whose recent poor form had led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure as manager.

ITV Sport

Manager-in-waiting Russell Slade has arrived at Cardiff City Stadium to watch the team he is expected to take charge of in the coming days take on Sheffield Wednesday.

Slade is understood to be all but announced as the man to take over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the Norwegians own resignation earlier this month.

Sheffield Star

Cardiff soaked up the pressure and enjoyed a good little spell themselves before the hour mark. Whittingham and Gunnarsson drilled wide before Pilkington’s venemous strike was turned away by Westwood.

However, Pilkington slammed in Cardiff’s second after he latched on to Jones’ clever knock down.

Yorkshire Post

Anthony Pilkington’s excellent control and right-foot finish gave the Welsh club the spoils for the first time in seven games.

It also secured a first win at the helm for stand-in bosses Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young.

But it remains to be seen if they will take charge against Brighton on Tuesday as Cardiff work to agree a compensation package with Leyton Orient and appoint Slade as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor.
