Slade meets with Cardiff staff

Russell Slade has met with Cardiff City officials ahead of taking over as manager, Sky Sports News HQ understands.

Slade, who handed in his resignation at Leyton Orient on Wednesday, is keen on the job made vacant by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure but is not expected to be appointed ahead of their weekend fixture against Bournemouth.

This is due in part to Orient taking legal advice over Slade’s resignation, which has left his former assistant Kevin Nugent in charge of the Sky Bet League One club this weekend.

Slade, who still had two years left on his contract, decided to leave the club immediately after being denied permission from Orient's new owners to speak to the Welsh club, who had approached Orient about his availability.

Just two weeks prior, Slade had been told by Orient directors he had one game to save his job following their poor start to the season, and rescued himself with a 1-1 draw with Notts County and a 2-1 win over Scunthorpe.

A statement published on Orient's website on Thursday confirmed that Nugent will take charge of the home game against Rochdale on Saturday, aided by coaches Andy Edwards and Kevin Dearden.

Former Orient chairman Barry Hearn, who sold the club to Italian businessman Francesco Becchetti in July, subsequently wrote on Twitter: "It's the end of the Slade era. Thanks Russ for the best four years I had in football and good luck for the future."

Former Brighton and Yeovil boss Slade took over at Brisbane Road in 2010 and led the club to the League One play-off final last season, after leading the division for much of the season.

Meanwhile, players Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young will remain in caretaker charge of Cardiff.

Russell Slade watched from the stands as Cardiff ended their victory drought with a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Sean Morrison had put the Bluebirds ahead only to bring the visitors level by putting through his own net early in the second half.
But Anthony Pilkington's excellent control and right-foot finish gave the Welsh club the spoils for the first time in seven games.
