A forum for all things Cardiff City

For the last few years I’ve always kept an eye on the goings on at Cardiff, intrigued to see what the enigma that is Vincent Tan’s next move.
At first the rebrand was funny. Since Rovers fell into the abyss many of us now see you as our main local rivals and dancing dragons and Malaysian flags at your place were a terrace songwriter’s dream. The dislike of Cardiff amongst Bristol fans has always been fairly strong, and if I’m honest more recently I’d say this was driven mainly by envy. You were our more successful neighbour with higher attendances, great individual players, and above all extremely passionate fans who were rowdy as hell and I remember made some great atmospheres at Ashton Gate.
The opportunity to turn the screw when your colours were changed was pounced on by our fans but looking back this may have been slightly facetious, since what Vincent Tan has and continues to do to your club is deeply disturbing, and should transcend all football rivalry. If somebody had done this to my beloved team I would be beyond raging. There are many football fans who feel genuinely sorry for all those Cardiff fans who opposed the rebrand and now struggle to recognize their club from what it used to be. Depressingly, from what I read, the atmosphere at your games now pales in comparison to what it was. Away trips to Cardiff used to be so eagerly anticipated for their atmosphere. Unfortunately the unity amongst Cardiff fans that manifested in such a hostile reception for visiting fans now appears to be in tatters, and blame for this has to lie with Tan.
Why am I writing this?
To support those who have always opposed the rebrand and urge those trying to remove Tan to keep fighting. His complete disregard for your clubs tradition and identity show he has no place in the game. Football should be a sport that happens to be a business and not the other way around and power-drunk egomaniacs like Tan should stick to running Macdonald’s before they ruin it for everybody.
At the very least hopefully what has happened at Cardiff will serve as a case study of the damaging effects of changing club tradition, and a warning to other clubs considering similar ventures. This may prevent other fans having to go through what you have, though be it a small consolation for you guys.

Good post.
Most will mock our situation. They should count themselves lucky as they are not in our situation. What has happened to us could happen to any club.

Very good post, cheers and good luck this season, see you next year unless we have swapped places with you

I think a lot of football fanatics are missing the 'old cardiff' including myself... Must of been a buzz crossing the bridge to support the away team, now it's a stadium with no soul.
Why they put the away fans so far away is beyond me. Should be beside the Canton to get the banter back and forth.

Excellent post. Perhaps it's a generational thing, but I still think of Bristol City as our main rivals. Can't say I enjoyed our last visit to Ashton Gate, though!
By the way, what's happening to the away end? Redevelopment?
The Gas will be back, so that rivalry has not completely gone away.

Really enjoyed that, great post.
Good to see that you disregard rivalry over something terrible that is happening to our club.

Top post. Some will disagree with you on the basis that the rebrand has coincided with arguably the best quality of football and player seen at Cardiff for some time. They will say that they only go to the football to watch football and the rest is all bravado. To me Cardiff city is about belonging to something and about being proud of being a part of it. It's a badge of honour and one I was proud to wear. We don't have that anymore and you are quite right in pointing it out. I still attend, I can't walk away but we are witnessing a slow death right now and that is true whether the team on the pitch are successful or not. I used to, but can 't now argue with those who say that the club sold it's soul for a bag of gold because that is how it must look regardless of how many if us won't accept the rebrand.

Ta Brizz. Much appreciated. For the first time in 55 yrs supporting City I left a game (on Tues) after 70 mins whilst still in progress. If Montgomery led his troops like Tan is leading us we'd all be speaking German now. Horrendous situation!

Great post & well written.
Sums up the rivalry between us & the solidarity that football can bring between proper fans.
Ignore colourblind he's the local retard.

Unfortunately with the success and move to a new bigger ground came 1000's of new fans who don't feel it like the older ones. Of course we needed to move and all clubs need new fans but they are the majority now and most don't know how to create an atmosphere or what it is even. That's modern football I guess. There are 1000's of Man utd and Chelsea fans who no longer go to watch their teams at home at least anymore for a variety of reasons. Not that I'm comparing us to them but it has happened to other teams too. Not quite like ours though eh? Only we could get a billionaire on board who could screw it up.
Lived in Bristol for a few years and had good banter with the red side, it was the year we beat you in the playoffs and went on to beat qpr at the mill stad. I wated that game in the Welsh pub in St.michaels hill which was quite surreal.
In some ways it's a shame that we allow people like Tan to come over with no regard for what they do, we should take in the German way of doing things. I'm sure all German clubs are mostly owned % by Germans and it has to be that way. God help us.

Because I deleted his original post and now I'm going to remove his latest one. If he posts anything like that again he is out of here.

Great post. It just goes to show that football is bigger than rivalries and egoes. The money is killing it!

We're redeveloping 3 sides of the ground. Will happen in stages and increase capacity to 27 000. After a lengthy and unsuccessful legal battle with the residents association of a town adjacent to the land our chairman had bought to build a new state of the art stadium we cut our losses and opted to redevelop Ashton Gate instead. In someways a lot of fans are happy to be staying although Plan A would have undoubtably made the club more lucrative, and as we all know unfortunately its money that matters these days. Should look good when its finished although some are concerned it will dilute the atmosphere like a lot of these new stadiums do. Fortunately for me im living in Sri Lanka for the duration of the rebuild which is apparently causing a logistical nightmare on match days, and it will be finished right about the time i move back. And the way we're playing this year you guys should get to see it yourselves next season!
