Look on the plus side regarding Slade

Wed Sep 24, 2014 6:57 pm

We are going to have a manager with 20 years experience in Football League dugouts. None of this 'Johnny Big Balls' type of manager, a proper old fashioned gaffer!

Let's just hope he is allowed to pick the team.....*cough*

His no.2 is Kevin nugent, but surely he will take over as caretaker manager for orient. Or will he leave too??? Be great if we could appoint a quality guy to work with slade.. Someone who has coached at this level.... Burton, Clarke type figure!,

Kevin knows the old Cardiff so that is advantageous, I am determined not to let my feelings towards the owner get in the way of backing the new gaffer.

I am trying to remain positive but I can't help feeling totally underwhelmed with all this. What a shit year for Cardiff City.

One thing you cannot argue against is the man has almost 700 Football League matches as manager behind him so he does have a great deal of experience.

Whatever your views he is a far better option than Scott Young and Danny Gabbidon and I hope VT keeps his beak out and allows this man to do his job.

Looks like i'm one of the few looking forward to his appointment Gav, a good old fashioned manager who knows how to get the best out of his players, bags of experience and wont miss a trick, we've gone down the big name manager route and its been a disaster, Pullis, martinez, monk, howe to name a few all sampled the lower leagues and have had success, i can see Slade being a cult hero at the City like the great Eddie May an Frankie Burrows :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

This is an important decision which should be head versus heart. I like what I read about him being a good football manager, old school and solid. My main concern is that why historically, no other club in a situation like ours has engaged him to ultimately be an impact manager to regain immediate promotion to the PL? For me, you have to get a proven pair of hands and if this decision/recomendation to VT is being driven by Dalman then I have zero confidence. We simply need a proven pair of hands with a track record of doing what we need. Pulis, Hughton or Lennon in that order for me. To be honest, the decision making in this process is like the blind leading the blind. The answer to our problem is more obvious than a bulldogs-bollocks.

I mentioned a day or so back that we got Jimmy Scoular after he was sacked by Bradford P.A. who like Newport were always a club trying to avoid having to seek re-election to the Football League. Think most supporters who have been around a while would agree that he turned out to be one of our best ever managers. Big names don't guarantee success. Have to realise that Slade (if he comes to us) will be inheriting a bunch of overpaid posers, and it may take more than a kick up the arse to get some of them actually earning their wages.

Mark, I'm an old fashioned football purist and would love an old fashioned solid football manager to lead us, even if he was relatively unknown. I feel that given our profile and current situation, we cannot take risks on the unknown, just like what we saw with OGS. For me, Pulis now as I fear we are running out of time and we just dont have the luxury of taking any more risks.

You may well be proven to be right. We can only live in hope. I always think every club takes a risk when appointing a new manager (Man U immediately springs to mind), and I honestly think there's an element of luck involved with any manger in that he needs to suit the players he inherits, which means being in the right place at the right time. Derby took Brian Clough from Hartlepool I think, and look how he turned around their fortunes. I am probably being optimistic, but I would love this bloke to become a City legend. Time will tell.

Whoever comes in will get my support and I would of course love an unknown old fashioned proper football manager to turn a squad of talented individuals into a performing unit & finally galvanise the squad. But bottom-dollar, I have sub-zero confidence in any football related decision that Dalman and co are involved in, including this one. They have demonstrated that they have no clue, despite Dalman being pitched as a high-rolling well-connected investment banker who 'knows about football'. Their strategy is to simply seek the advice of others of the type we have seen present in the directors box, which for me is a real concern, as they appear that they cannot even make a decent decision on who to seek sound advice from in the first place. Of course, there are no guarantees if my (and most) first choice is Pulis was ever brought on board. But as a wise man said in the '80's - 'If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team'. So I'm not sure if Slade can help in our current situation, but last season, the man who saved a doomed Palarse as soon as he entered the building, is currently available for hire.

Slade will have one hell of job sorting out the squad, but given time I think he is the man to take us forward (if tan let's him get on with the job.) If tan interferes then it will all end in tears.

Slade also needs his trusted backroom staff/coaches and not Scott young which has been rumoured on here.

Re: Look on the plus side regarding Slade

Thu Sep 25, 2014 8:34 am

I'm all for Slade joining myself, how could I not with a fine surname like that lol.

Anyway, he may not be the first choice manager and a 'big' name but he's obviously got something to get the job over the likes of managers that are available, Tan could have went for Pulis, Moyes, Hughton etc but opted for Slade.

Let's get behind him from the start and hope he turns the team around. :bluescarf:
