How are we in this position?

Got promoted to premiership alongside two other championship clubs.
We had the best team in the championship by far.
We spent more money than the other championship clubs.
We got relegated, they stayed up.
My theory is we spent too much money on big names who didn't live up to the price tag.
Do we blame the manager or scouting system for this?
I feel that if we had a bigger manager in charge than malky then, we should still be in the premiership. I was once a supporter of his for his tactics but his signings were attrocious,
