Clarke and Hughton now being considered

Cardiff City step up moves to land Russell Slade as manager, but Steve Clarke and Chris Hughton also enter the frame

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan ponders his options, with Leyton Orient boss Russell Slade having emerged as front-runner

Vincent Tan will this week step up moves to land Russell Slade as Cardiff City’s new manager, but is also weighing up bigger name candidates for the role.

We understand former West Brom boss Steve Clarke and ex-Norwich chief Chris Hughton are also being considered by Tan as alternatives to Slade in the hunt for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s full-time successor

Fans’ favourite Tony Pulis and Neil Lennon, the former Celtic manager, are also believed to be in the frame but lower down the pecking order for the Malaysian billionaire.

A sixth option would be for Tan to keep caretaker duo Scott Young and Danny Gabbidon at the helm for the time being, the Cardiff players having rallied around the pair in securing a 2-2 draw with Derby on Saturday.

Tan will spend the next 24 hours discussing the identity of the new City gent with trusted football aides, although Slade has jumped to the head of the queue after confirming the Bluebirds had made an approach to his club Leyton Orient.

The 53-year-old, who has spent his managerial career in the lower divisions, said: “I think they may have requested permission to talk to me, but I’m uncertain. I’m a little bit in the dark.

“It is nice to be associated with such a big club like that. I’m very proud of the fact that they’ve seen the good work that we’ve done at Leyton Orient.”

Prior to his role in east London, Slade was in charge of Brighton, Yeovil, Grimsby, Scarborough, Sheffield United and Notts County.

He has impressed Tan after twice being named League One Manager of the Year. The first time was in 2009, after Slade took little Yeovil to the play-off final, where they were defeated by Blackpool at Wembley.

Slade won the award again last season after this time taking Orient to Wembley, where they lost out on promotion to Rotherham following a penalty shoot-out.

However, this season hasn’t begun so brightly and Slade was reportedly on the brink of losing his job as Orient slumped down the table, before a 2-1 weekend win at fellow strugglers Scunthorpe saw them climb up to 17th.

Clarke, who has impressive pedigree as assistant boss to Jose Mourinho at Chesea and Kenny Dalglish with Liverpool, is also being discussed by Tan.

Ironically, he lost his job as West Brom manager after his Baggies were defeated by Malky Mackay’s Cardiff last season.

Hughton is a third candidate who has entered the fray and knows the Championship well. He led Newcastle to promotion into the Premier League and also took Birmingham into the play-offs.

Pulis and Lennon are still being looked at, but would prove more costly options for the Bluebirds who may need to tighten the purse strings following the huge outlay Tan has already spent on compiling the biggest squad in the Championship.

There may also be a call within the club to keep Young and Gabbidon in charge for the time being and see how results go.

Hughton is rubbish. Prefer Slade.

Not really bothered either way, they may work out well or fail.

Pulis would be the one for me, none of the others excite me except Di Matteo, although they would all get my backing and all seem decent enough managers.

Loved this bit -

Yeah, sure.

I bet Tan's knowledge of League One matters is little short of encyclopedic!

Surprise manager to come in I expect. We have been surprised by some signings being kept quiet in the past so why not names of managers.
