Do we really have to be in the Premier League ?

Fri Sep 19, 2014 9:40 pm

The club spent years trying to get there, got there, didn't do well, fans didn't really enjoy it, got relegated, now we are back to where we have been for year, fighting to maintain second stream football. It's what we are, a decent second stream (championship) club. Does Wales really need another PL side. It doesn't matter what league we are in, if you support Cardiff City you just know your going to love the ride (providing we go back to Blue) :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

I enjoy the Championship, but the Premier League is the best league in the world.

But that's not the point.

The point is that we simply can not afford to not go up. The club's debt is growing all the time, and promotion is a must.

I think this season is already to late, certainly for automatic, we may make the play offs but it's looking pretty remote :bluescarf:

Yes and for a considerable time if the press release from the Trust is accurate ,there will be no debt to equity until promotion back to the PL is achieved , question is , what if the club doesn't regain PL status ,how long before Tan walks out

If we are not in the premier league we lose £20m a season because we overspend. We could probably survive for the first two years of parachute payments but is Tan really going to keep putting £20m a year into a failing project?

That's a pretty defeatist view. You have 39 games left, that's 117 points up for grabs. The season is far from over yet and you have a squad more than capable of putting a run together. If you get the managerial appointment right then I think you will go up.

Although I have to admit that after years of being in the lower leagues, almost going out of business whilst watching Sam Hamann plough money into your club culminating in your climb to near the top of the Championship... It's a good time to be a Jack! :D

The long term stability of the club is the most important thing, but who wouldn't want promotion to the PL? It's a strange attitude for someone to suggest they're happy muddling along in the second tier forever. Surely the aim of competing for something is success at the end of it all?

Burnley did not spend fortunes chasing it. They got it right off the pitch and on it by hard work. We are gambling every year and all gamblers usually go bust at some point

If PL status is regained what then in terms of football , winning the league ? that is highly unlikely it would a hell of an achievement just to break into the top 6 .You can have success at all levels less so further up the ladder you rise .You may active the odd Cup win but for a Club like Cardiff and similar thats about it .

Not if the jacks get relegated...
Seriously many fans don't like the PL. Its uncompetitive and a ripoff. There's more soul in the football league.

Pondering whether we'll ever get back to the Prem with people like Russell Slade in charge is as hypothetic as me wondering if i'll ever get a 4-in-the-bed with Angelina Jolie, Kim Kardashian and Cheryl Cole.

It's a nice thought, but It's never going to happen.

If you play football at a competitive level in a structured league where there is promotion and relegation, then the answer to the question is yes. It's about ambition and striving to play the best football you possibly can, it's about the glory of beating your rivals and becoming champions of cups and competitions. As we know there are highs and lows along the way but the emotions felt by achieving at a high level is what every player and club as well as the fans ultimately should want.

Don't you feel cheated though ?

Years or supporting us during the dark ages and when we nailed it it was through Tan "buying" us a spot but the price was the rebrand....

The playoff year was more real...... They were our players, cheap cast offs and a few home grown lads..... Real backs to the wall stuff.

I don't mind a few season finding ourselves again (in blue obviously), build up slowly and hopefully make a run through the playoffs. Its a pretty big stadium for that though

No I don't feel cheated! I have been through much worse times then this as a Cardiff City fan. And the so-called re-brand does not affect me as I watch football not colours. Also the size of the stadium is irrelevant. For the record the Stadium is the finest in any City fans living memory if you consider playing surface, safety and facilities.

Yes you really do have to be premier league again.

How on earth do you think you're gonna generate enough revenue to cover your expenditure, and that's without your debt, just sitting in the championship.

Vinny will want his money eventually and the best way to achieve that is to get promoted to the premier league and let him skim the TV money. This is what it's all been about after all.

As much as I loved it in the championship, because it is a cracking division, there is no profit in the championship.

in short Yes, seeing as there is more money in the PL.....

I, for one, don't want to see us failing again at the play-offs (which is more than likely to happen under DJ). This season is going to be hard for us now, but with the players we have we should have walked it from the start. Now the players need to knuckle down and dig in, show why they are worthy of the fees paid for them and why they deserve to wear a Cardiff shirt regardless of who is picked by Tan as manager/head coach.

Overall it will be down to the manager/head coach to pick the squad week in week out but the players have to perform, otherwise we'll be in League 1 next year and even further towards administration because Tan won't want to know if we get relegated again and the debt will just get bigger
