FAW Statement

Fri Sep 19, 2014 2:34 pm

http://www.faw.org.uk/news/FAW-Statemen ... URO-2020-D ecision/97757/

I believe we put a very good bid in to UEFA but there transport system we have let it down...our airport , whilst having excellent runway and facilities is not functioning properly...there are no cheap flights to Cardiff and poor links from the airport. No tram or metro system in the city doesn't help either.

Our city needs to compete with other European cities by tempting low cost airlines back to Cardiff and to improve transport structures within the city and surrounding areas not just to be able to hold a sporting event but for the benefit of the people who live here.

not at all, for a city of our size our airport links are abysmall, myself (and most people i know) fly from bristol every time

Dublin must have improved since the last time I flew there.....?

Nah if we can hold FA Cup finals we can hold European Games, its not ideal not to have a good transport set up but it would have worked.Such a shame.

Dublin airport has over 20 million passengers a year pass through compared to Cardiff Airport that has just 1 million passengers...they have Ryan air and other carriers regularly using the airport, we have the expensive KLM and very little else...Dublin has a population of 527,612 and Cardiff has a population of 346,000...so 160,000 more people in Dublin but 19 million more passengers...I think you point out a great example of how bad our airport is.

Dual carriage way from the airport rejected yet they now narrow the road for a huge cycle path which hardly anyone will use. All the racing cycles use the road. Daft decision especially now owned by the welsh assembly. Cardiff airport is crying out for a better connection to the rest of Cardiff.

I love Cardiff but it is punching well above it's weight when getting major events. If we weren't a capital city Bristol would be pissing all over us.

To move onto the next level we need facilities that in all honesty the city population cannot support or pay for.

The airport is appalling, we will never get the funding for a metro system or a tram system of any sort of size. Its no good if it is one line with four stops on it.

Soon the city will lose a lot of business when the Celtic Manor builds a conference centre and there will not be a need for two in the area.

Even the Motor point Arena is now losing gigs. You now need a 12 to 15k venue but the area may not be able to support it.

The council either go big and try and increase the population and therefore the facilities or we pull back on thinking we are a major player in Europe.

Is the fact that there is little room around the Millenium Stadium for corporate tents etc., a factor? It used to be mentioned as a reason why the stadium will never get a Champions' League final. Also, it's a rugby ground, with a history of dodgy pitches. No football has been played there for a while.

Back to the airport, I've used it a lot over the last four years, and agree that transport links are poor, especially from the M4. Used KLM a lot, andcthrybare excellent. Cardiff airport needs flag-flying airlines as well as the low-cost ones. Part of the problem is that Cardiff and Bristol are competing for the same traffic. Dublin has no such competition.

Shame to miss out, though.

The idea was for Cardiff Blues to join us and hopefully the arms park could become a convention centre.

The Millenium Stadium could then be finally finished and corporate facilities would be perfect.

We chucked out the Blues so it is Tans fault we have no 2020 games.

lack of press / hospitality facilities use to be a problem for uefa but obviously times have moved on surely baku hasnt half what cardiff has? its nothing to do with airport as we can decant thousands of rugby fans very quiekly over a couple of days or so hardly a problem is it? especially when we just had super cup not as big but big game all the same, scot, wembley, irel have got matches when it was said only 2 venues in uk would get matches so guess just unlucky!!! same as other places not picked :o

Airport is a problem when it costs fans a fortune to fly to and from it..and a definite factor amongst other things.

What's amazing is everyone knows the fees to land at cardiff prevent more airlines using it. So without being a genius just reduce the fees to entice more airlines.

Good riddance to the egg-chasers. Should never have been in our stadium.

They should have went for the Sevenside Airport plan which was recommended by Independent experts rather than buying a shite airport in Rhoose as a vanity project and in the end is turning out to be a welsh taxpayers black hole!!

The point made was the crap transport from the airport......which is not true compared to other airports.

Bristol has total shite bus and train connections and is miles from a motorway.

The last time I flew to and from Dublin we had to fight for a taxi or queue for a bus. Has the new Dublin tram spread as far as the airport ?

Dublin is only a busy airport as it has next to no competition. Cardiff could cope with more it just doesn't have the. carriers ...at present. Bog all to do with the bus or train connections.
