DVP SQUAD WIN LATE IN BIRMINGHAM AS NOONE MAKES HIS COMEBACK

Tuesday 9th September 2014
by Sam Roberts

Craig Noone comfortably came through 45 minutes on his return from injury as Cardiff City’s development side defeated Birmingham City 2-1 with a late winner at Wast Hills Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion man almost started the match in style, cutting in from the right wing before curling a left footed shot towards goal that drifted just over the crossbar.

Cardiff continued to threaten the home side, with Noone’s cross field ball finding Tyler Roche, though Roche’s low cross from the left side just evaded the outstretched leg of striker Rhys Healey.

It was the hosts who went in at the break one goal ahead, after midfielder Liam Truslove rose highest to powerfully head home James Fry’s cross, giving City keeper Charlie Horton little chance of saving.

GOAL: BIRMINGHAM CITY 1-0 CARDIFF CITY (Liam Truslove, 43 mins)

HALF TIME: BIRMINGHAM CITY 1-0 CARDIFF CITY

Nilton Terroso withdrew Craig Noone at half time following an impressive opening 45 minute spell. After coming through unscathed, the City winger will hope to be in Ole’s thoughts ahead of the upcoming home double against Norwich City and Middlesbrough.

Coming out of the blocks quickly in the second half, the Bluebirds drew level on 49 minutes with forward Healey scoring his second league goal of the campaign. The former Connah’s Quay man broke clear of United States U23 International Will Packwood before firing under Colin Doyle.

GOAL: BIRMINGHAM CITY 1-1 CARDIFF CITY (Rhys Healey, 49 mins)

The away side continued their impressive start to the second period with substitute Kane Owen almost hitting the back of the net with a long-range free kick. Owen had replaced Macauley Southam at half time in a more advanced position to his usual left-back birth and showed tenacity and strength in an unfamiliar role.

Despite the home team hitting the crossbar three times, it was a fairly even match at Wast Hills with both teams having rightful claims for victory. The winning goal however came on ninety minutes, when the unflappable Doyle was finally caught out by the Cardiff attack.

Forwards Rhys Healey and Dane Griffiths challenged Doyle fairly for a high ball, with the ‘keeper spilling the ball. Fortunately for City, he did so into the path of midfielder Ben Watkins, who composedly slotted home from 10 yards to seal a dramatic late victory for the travelling Bluebirds.

FULL TIME: BIRMINGHAM CITY 1-2 CARDIFF CITY

Cardiff City:Horton, Wickham (James, 60), Tutonda, Yorwerth, Amondarain, B Watkins, Southam (Griffiths, 45), Bowen, Roche, Healey, Noone (Owen, 45). Subs not used: Massaro, Williams

Good to see him back :ayatollah:

Think he'll get half an hour against Norwich, when they're tired :thumbright:

As long as Noone feels no ill effects from today then he will be on the bench at the very least on Saturday surely.

Birmingham City U21 1 Cardiff City U21 2 - Blues lose to stoppage time goal
Sep 09, 2014

By Colin Tattum

Colin Tattum's reserves report: Liam Truslove opens the scoring, but Blues still searching for first win

Blues were sunk by a stoppage-time goal in a fractious game during which they hit the woodwork three times.

Ben Watkins had the simple task of sticking the ball into an unguarded goal as it dropped kindly to him after Colin Doyle, James Fry and Will Packwood all competed amid a clutch of bodies to clear a cross from the right and ended up on the deck.

It was a tough to take winner, in the first minute of added-time, for Blues in the Under-21 Professional Development League.

They are still to win in the competition this season, having drawn two and lost the other of their previous three matches.

Truslove had put Blues ahead with a fine header from Fry’s cross in the 43rd minute, getting in front of his marker strongly to find the top corner.

In the 14th minute Packwood planted a header onto the crossbar after climbing above everyone to meet Truslove’s corner.

And Andrew Shinnie, on his return from a back injury, cracked a stupendous drive from 30 yards that smacked off the angle.

As in previous matches, when Alan Thompson's side also found the woodwork, Blues luck was well and truly out.

Blues were left to rue those near misses as Cardiff levelled three minutes after the break through Rhys Healey, who fired low across Doyle from the left of the area.

The referee often let an uncompromising approach from Cardiff ride, to Blues frustration.

Charlee Adams was trampled all over by Josh Yorwerth, who didn't even receive a ticking off.

But the visitors were more dangerous in the second-half and created some good openings, without ever really stretching Doyle with their final attempt at goal until the very end.

Yet Blues - playing a 3-5-2 - suffered further misfortune in the 79th minute when Truslove was teed-up by Viv Solomon-Otabor only for a rasping first time drive from just outside the area to clip the top of the crossbar.

Then Josh Dacres-Cogley was just a fraction away from sliding in a cross by Navid Nasseri in the 87th minute, before the latter curled over an attempt.

Jaye Bowen spurned a great opening before the match entered stoppage-time and Cardiff, after swinging a couple of crosses into the area, got a decisive break as Blues failed to clear.

Blues: Doyle, Adams (Nasseri 78), Hancox, Packwood, Fry, Bell, Webb, Truslove, McGee (Solomon-Otabor ht), Shinnie (Dacres-Cogley 65), Reilly. Not used: Kelly, Armstrong.
