Cardiff City legend Nathan Blake: Mark Hudson should have been showed the respect he deserves
Blakey has his say on Hudson's departure and calls for a team selection that shows a direction for the rest of the season
I respect Mark Hudson. He’s been a top guy, good club man, effective player and splendid captain for Cardiff City.
He should have been given a good send-off when he went to Huddersfield, but he’s clearly been left with a bitter taste of disappointment amid suggestions concerning his own goal at Wolves.
It’s laughable. Look at the way the goal was scored. Huds couldn’t do that again if he tried 100 times. And that sort of thing wouldn’t even cross his mind.
It was a mistake, a fluke and a terrible way for Hudson to end his final match for the Bluebirds.
These things happen in football. That’s where it should have ended, not with questions raised.
This was the club captain, remember, who led City to a Wembley cup final, the play-offs and automatic promotion. He should have been shown the respect he deserved.
It’s a sign of the times, though. People often don’t give players credit these days. In the future, maybe 10 years or more down the line, he will be respected. But it was just a case of ‘Off you go’ and Hudson was suddenly a Huddersfield player.
He joins Anthony Gerrard in Yorkshire and is an experienced defender who will do well for them. I hope he does.
While City’s former captain starts a new chapter of his career, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has some big decisions to make. He has spent big money on two centre-backs - Bruno Manga and Sean Morrison- and we’ll find out quickly whether they are better than the defenders he already had.
That’s up for discussion, but I’m sure we will have the chance to watch them play together in home matches against Norwich on Saturday and Middlesbrough next Tuesday.
The big question right at this moment seems to be ‘What is Solskjaer’s best team’. I’m not even certain he knows that himself yet.
Cardiff have a first team squad of 29. Solskjaer has the players he wants, he has been given the financial backing and there are no excuses, nowhere to run. City must go up this season.
It’s unthinkable that City will still be in the Championship for 2015-16.
A little gap has already opened and Cardiff are five points behind leaders Nottingham Forest. We know Solskjaer’s team are going to be there or thereabouts, but we need to see the evidence that this team has the automatic promotion potential needed.
The Bluebirds must beat Norwich and then earn three points against Middlesbrough. That will ensure they will be right in the mix.
There is no doubt Cardiff are capable of beating anybody in the Championship, but they have to find the consistency needed for promotion. To achieve that I believe Solskjaer must find a settled 16 to 18 players and stick, almost exclusively for Championship matches, within that group.
Rotation can work, but not too much. He must not upset the balance by constantly making changes.
When I look at the size of Solskjaer’s squad I’m not sure I could name a team with any confidence. David Marshall is the only certainty, while I would probably go with Brayford, Manga, Morrison and Fabio across the back.
I would start with Kenwyne Jones up top, but then I’m stuck. What about midfield?
The very best with that, Ole.
I couldn’t name a settled team because there are so many options. Solskjaer has been Cardiff manager for 23 league matches - and only once has he selected an unchanged team.
Yet he must find a starting line-up, stick with it and trust them.
That would give the players a chance to be comfortable with each other and build within City’s team. They need to find an understanding between them.
Centre-backs with full-backs, wide midfield players with full-backs, strikers with midfield players and more. The team has changed too many times.
Cardiff have done okay. It’s been a decent, if unspectacular start to the season.
But with consistency in selection I believe they will have the chance to do even better.
The international break has given Solskjaer the chance to assess. His team are reasonably well placed with two home matches to come.
Let’s see a real statement of intent and a team selection which will show a real sense of direction for the rest of this season

Its all well and good playing the respect card....but you have to let us know who said what to who in regards to the own goal.

had and have a lot of time for Huds, but all this nonsense about the own goal is a red herring - he is 32, slow, and not as good as other players in that position. He would have stayed if Bruno Mars hadn't signed - but that was late on, so what are the club to do?
The manager is doing his best for the club - not a footballer who has been handsomely paid, is well respected, and look - got a transfer for nothing much to help him get his wish of first team football.
The club did the best they could for Hudson by charging naff all to Huddersfield - he could have been left up in the stands until January, when in all likelihood a team in need would have paid a transfer fee for him.
It happens all the time in football - it is the downside of the system, I would have liked to have applauded him on the field before he left and said "thank you".
Being paid £20k a week (that is £1 MILLION a YEAR!!) as a Championship centre half 4th choice - tough gig that, no right to bitch about going anywhere chief.

Is this the Nathan Blake who a few seasons ago said that Hudson should be dropped and stripped of the captaincy?

Am I the only one who isn't impressed with the signing of Morrison?
He does not look confident at all and has made a few mistakes in every game so far this season. He just seems too easy for the strikers to beat when the ball is played on the floor...
I do hope that he comes good for us though and I hope that having Manga as a partner at the back will work well for him too. I really hope he proves me wrong this season. He could well be nervous - I will give him another 10-15 games to see if I do rate him or not.

Which he owned up to today and said that Hudson made him eat his words. Fair play.

Blake is a pundit that talks out of his arse. Says Daehli can't play an inside/forward pass then someone made a video to upstage him. He hates on what everyone thinks is good to look different as we all rate Daehli. Far from a City legend, if he's classed as a City legend then proves how tinpot of a club we are

"Cardiff City legend Nathan Blake"

He only scored 40 goals for us in 167 games for and was only here for 4 years before he turned him back on us to sign for a Premiership club (Sheffield United). Earnie scored 5 goals less than him in 1 season for us and the fans still adore him to this day.
Blake isn't a legend. He is just another one of those players who has played his part in our history and scored a couple of goals along the way. Mind you, that goal against Man City was immense!
If someone is going to count Blake a legend, surely you must include Jay Bothroyd as a City legend too who actually scored more goals for us in less games...

Each to their own I suppose. I never rated Blake personally.
