You haven't gotten any specific diagnosis?

My advice is to see a good physiotherapist, even if you can't get help fixing the problem, you could get great help learning to live with it. Then again, most people with severe back pain (in general) benefit from building core muscles and exercise. Make sure you work on you posture too, extremely important for everyone - especially people with back problems.

If its sciatica, then stretching exercises is your best option, like touching your toes, moving your hips round and round, doing windmills with your arms ect keep active and decent painkillers basicly, that's about the only thing you can do

I would be careful with those. Read a study not long ago, and they did not only find that physiotherapists can´t do anything about back problems, it was also concluded that their standard treatment makes it worse. The first thing you should do, is to see if your bed is making everything worse. If it´s too soft, that´s not good at all. Also your sleeping position could have an impact. Sleeping on your back is mostly advised, but if you´re sleeping on your side, make sure your knees is not lifted too high towards your chin (basically keep your back straight). And move to a warmer country, then could help as well :)

Do you have a link to that study? Obviously physiotherapists can help, but that doesn't mean they necessarily can help the level of pain - that depends on the problem(s). And I can't really see what you would put into "standard treatment" when it comes to back problems in general.

The advice about bed choice is very good.

I'm not good with english (or latin) names on diseases and such.. Sciatica is compressed discs, as I understand it?

My physiotherapist gave me a meter long hard-foam sylinder to help do streching exercises because my lower discs are quite compressed. Excellent tool - hurt like a MF to use it in the beginning but has really paid off (for me). Helped focus on my posture a lot too.

This.

Here's a suggestion that has worked for me;

Get on all fours, hands on the floor beneath shoulders, and knees beneath hips, then slowly arch your back towards the ceiling and bow your head towards the floor as far as you comfortably can, hold for 5-10 seconds, then do the exact opposite, head far as far as you can manage whilst arching your back down towards the floor. Again, hold for 5-10 seconds. do between 3-5 reps, twice a day for the first week, then 5-10 second week.

You'll feel an immediate relief of pain when you're done, but it will return quickly, but you're strengthening the muscles around your core, so over time it will help a lot.

The best thing to do is to have long walks in nature, or go have exercise in an indoor swimming pool(hot). Kcuf_ho, got some brilliant exercises for you. Sciatica is when the sciatic nerve is compressed or damaged. Goes from spine to your toes, and is bloody painfull when affected.
If you can't exercise, use painkillers. Resting wont do you any good. Gl :thumbright:

I fractured my spine two years ago and suffer with a lot of back pain. I find acupuncture really helps. Also invest in a dual output Tens machine. This is excellent and makes a huge difference. Get one priced at about 40-50 pounds. They sell them on Amazon.
Good luck

Lots of good advise above. I've suffered for a long time. Exercise is good (but fast bowling in cricket and egg-chasing not recommended as I found out).

Stretches and core strengthening are good and will help Lie on your back and use your stomach muscles to push your back flat onto the floor. Then stretch your arms out behind you as far as you can until they touch the floor. You'll feel your stomach and back lift. Use your stomach muscles to push it down, bring your arms up to 90 degrees from your head (pointing to the ceiling) repeat 10-20 times. As you strengthen this will get easier so start doing it with some weights. 5kgs is the max you should try. This really helps strengthen the stomach muscles which will help with your back.

Also, if you sit a lot in work get a lumber support which will help your posture and practice sitting with your butt at the back of your chair and with your feet flat on the floor.

For some back problems you can have steroid injections, they are fecking painful, but can really help.

For pain relief the heat pads are awesome. When you are in agony and put one of these on it's almost as good as sex !

Don't rely on them too much as after a few days your skin will get itchy, and they cost, but they can give some great short term relief. THERMACARE I use.

Good luck - and if it helps I'm 44, had a fecked up back for 20 years and still play footy twice a week, despite 4 degenerated discs and 2 stress fractures in facet joints. You can get your life back. You just need to put the work in.

Exercise is the key. I have permanent sciatica to my foot despite a double discectomy 3yrs ago. But by using simple exercises i can manage pretty well. Physios can string u as a cash cow. Search net for best stretches to do daily. These include slow squats and touch toes, push against wall with legs slightly apart and chin tucked i then press against the wall and tight the arse cheeks.on ur back straight leg raises and try front press ups wth ur legs to the floor. Again pull buttocks tight.i played rugby on 52nd bday so not sll doom and gloom. Good luck

Suffer with chronic back pain as have discs gone. Found after being taken in to hospital and having an MRI. Get an MRI done and find out the problem, as some things can make things worse.

Cpl of people have mentioned Pilates. Get on it and keep it up. Acupuncture has worked wonders for me. And don't get on the pain killers they prescribe. I've just come of them after 5 years addicted and it's not a nice place.

Also looking at getting off the tools (I'm a heating engineer), as my health has to come first...

Good luck mate, it's a crap place to be. And some people just don't get it...

Re: lower back pain

I get lower back problems from time to time due to arthritis from previous whiplash injuries. I usually visit Peter Palmer the Osteopath in Cathedral Road when it gets bad, but exercise; the right posture when sitting; using a TENS machine (the dual one is about £25 at Argos) and an orthopaedic memory foam bed ( I use 1500 pocket sprung memory foam one, but they can get quite hot as the foam moulds to your body) all help to prevent rather than cure. Backinaction is a good shop in Bristol for all furniture related to helping back problems. The biggest problem is that there is a fine line between exercise and rest and too much and too little can both cause problems. It is very much trial and error to find out where you draw that line. Hope this helps.

Reading your post has made me come on here and post again. So after resetting my password to get back in I want to offer you some advice.

I have had some terrible lower back pain in the past. Bad enough that I can't get out of bed or even dream of getting in the car. I'm quite over weight which don't help, however I started to swim 4 days out of 7 for half hour every morning.
And have been free from back pain for over 12 months!!!

You watch now I will be fucked in the morning all in agony lol!!

Serious though the best advice I can give is swim. It's low impact and you seem to move every muscle bone or joint

Re: lower back pain

I have had problems with my back since I was 14, no one could fined out what it was till I was 27. and then only cos I went to a rheumatologist.
I was then told after blood test, that I had a complaint call Ankylosing spondylitis.

( http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/AboutAr ... wwodT04AuA )

I do hope that is not your problem as its a b*stard to live with. But as your Doctor to refer you to a specialist in the rheumatology, or orthopedics, they between them should come to a conclusion to what it really is . Hope this helps

mate was bed ridden for a yr, had therapy which helped slowly but surely but hes back surfing now and even did tough mudder last month with me. wer in our 30s now, but he swears by Pilates. says its given him a full recovery, simple method but prob more for the long term recovery in your situ rather than instant

there is plenty of stretches you can do for scatica ... grab your right foot for example with your left hand and bring it up to your body, then with your right hand push the outside of your knee to the left .... do it everyday even on good days ... if you can do it in the bath the muscle is warmed and will stretch better .... give it a go!
