Would this be success ?

Thu Aug 28, 2014 8:50 pm

Early days in the Capital One Cup but having a home tie against Bournemouth we will be favourites in the tie to progress to the next round.

With the squad we have, would you consider getting to the final (possibly even winning the cup) but not getting promoted being a success ?

Obviously our number one aim this season is promotion but if we fail on that target but made it to Wembley and perhaps win the cup, would you think that this would then be a successful season ?

Not for me, promotion is the one and only aim. Anything less would be disappointing.

Having said that, the way the draw has worked out, we could get a decent run to the semi-finals at least. With the size of our squad and the quality of our squad, we could do both - IF the draw is kind with us.

Promotion is only vital because of our debts but other than that I'd rather win a cup....Cardiff city's name on a trophy, sod the premier league

Been to Wembley three times already.

League is priority, that's where the money is as well.

Maybe the question should be can we afford not to be promoted this season?

No it's just a reserve teams cup....

Premotion is the key, a run in the cup for the reserves is good fun for them, but it's not a proper competition, as most teams do not take it seriously until quarter finals....

to answer the question in the thread,

No, and anyone who knows anything about modern day football would say the same. there is one aim in the championship, and thats promotion, anything else pales into insignificance.

if it was the FA cup then maybe, I prefer the championship anyway. Right now, any win is a goal, league, cup, academy game.....I like winning.

I agree with the above myself that Promotion is the only success on the pitch this season.

But what would VT do if Ole took us to Wembley and maybe won a cup but don't get promoted ?

Would VT see that as success or would he not and consider Ole has failed.

carl, a cup final is a day out. the fruits of promotion last a whole season, and as such, promotion is the name of the game for every championship team of reasonable quality.

ole will be very fortunate to keep his job if we don't go up.

Success or Failure this year can only be based on a return to the Premiership - we either succeed or fail.

With our outgoings on wages I think we have to get promoted this season.

theres a very good chance we can do both i hope. it will be good to try and do a double

Have to get promoted this season but I'd love a European tour with City :ayatollah:

Not the carling cup no, it would be a great achievement but it is a second rate cup.

Promotion for me

Wembley for me, great day out and we still get to play in the championship next season, ideal situation for me. But in terms of success only promotion can be deemed as successful

I'd love to actually win a cup but I think we would end up playing a big 4 side and coming unstuck at wembley.
we need the promotion also

Personally, I think it would be a success, as is winning any trophy.

For me, being selfish, a good season in the Championship is seeing us win lots of games and being highly competitive in the others, staying in the top four to six for much of the season, but just failing to make it in the end.

I know that might sound stupid/bad etc but I really didn't enjoy the Premier League last season, it's not real football, and what I'm used to, it's too expensive and we lose a lot of games, so I can't see that as being fun again to be honest.

Give me the Championship every time. More games, great trips, Tuesday nights .....and maybe, just maybe, Tan might sell up at a knock-down price to cut his losses and the next guy turns us back to blue.............or nobody comes in and we go bust.

Oh the joy's of supporting the City !

With our wages and our debt,it's promotion without a doubt.
I love the Cup,but it can only be used for keeping players fit :thumbright:

VT wants promotion, anything else like a good cup run is a bonus.......

Promotion first but this league is notoriously hard to get out of,espeacially at the first attempt at going back up.
I want promotion first like everyone else but if we won the cup of course it would be a successful season even if we didn't go up!
Both would be amazing but im getting carried away :bluescarf:

We have some unfinished business at Wembley on 3 fronts

Playoffs
FA Cup
League Cup

Let's go for the triple and be the first Championship club too achieve it. :ayatollah:

Jules, that is the problem,we need the money more than ever this year and that's why promotion is so important to us.
But your right Premier League was not that good.

I find it a bit interesting how it seemed a good portion of people last year would have rather be relegated and go deep in the cup than stay up - and now find the opposite.

Personally I don't see why we can't have both ;) but if I'm forced to pick, I'd rather go back up and take our revenge on the league :P
