A couple of observations from Port Vale match

Wed Aug 27, 2014 8:35 am

Forget which league Port Vale play in, they wanted to win the game and wete in fact a half decent opposition at times.

We had much more width to our game than against Wolves, where we were torn apart by playing too narrow against a team with quick and strong wingers. For me that's why Fabio was exposed and made to look ordinary. Last night was different!

Micheda and Guerra were great. Guerra has excellent feet, he works hard and takes up really good positions. Micheda is as strong as Jones but gets through ten times as much work. I know people keep saying Jones is a different type of player and we shouldn't expect him to be constantly running around but in Micheda we can have both. He made one run in the first half down the inside channel chasing a through ball which was probably a bit overcooked. Jones wouldn't have bothered but Micheda really turned on the gas. He beat a defender who had 10 yards on him and who was looking an easy favourite but our striker just brushed him aside. His speed and strength look really good. He also kept this going right to the end of the game. His second goal again showed how strong he is. He picked the ball up outside the area and about mid point, saw a gap and powered through, rounding the keeper before showing real composure to score from a difficult angle. We haven't seen that kind of direct running with someone rounding the keeper in years. I just can't remember the last time one of our strikers made that kind of positive run. I'd start him against Fulham to keep him on fire after that performance.

There weren't that many of us there last night but I do agree with another poster that we have a small minority of younger supporters (16-19 year olds at best) who let the side down a bit. They spent the entire second half calling their keeper names and trying to put him off in a really boring and sometimes offensive way. It's alright to have a bit of a go but this went on for 45 minutes and it was exactly the same with the keeper at Coventry. It's too much lads. It was a shame really as they started the first half with a few songs encouraging Barnum Bob but then again even that went a bit far when they were asking him to do the Ayatollah every two minutes. I remember watching him from one of Vale's goal kicks and he was put right off, trying to concentrate but aware of the fans constant ? (I don't want to use the word berating, because I know that's not what they were intending). I remember thinking that the coaching staff would have noticed that and the lad would have got a real rollicking at half time.

The same group did spark up the Tans a wanker song but it died a death as they realised that it just sounded stupid on the back of this weeks revelations.

On a more positive note that's now 4 wins, 1 draw and just a single injury time defeat.

I'll take that.

Hi Skewett, what was your opinion of Ralls' performance? Is he knocking on the door yet?

Some very posotive comments which is always nice to hear, really looking forward to seeing macheda play in the league. Just had a look at the port vale forum to get there take on the game and there are some very positive comments about some of our youngsters.

Ralls playex really well and he belted his goal in from a distance. His link up play has improved and to me he looks like he's filled out a bit whilst he was away which can only add to his ball retention and tackling power. Didn't realise he was Captain till tbis morning which says a bit about Ole's opinion of the lad as well.

just watched the match and he surprised me, creates all the time in the world on the ball for himself like medel last season he's not caught in possession very easily in the dangerous parts of the pitch he plays in. Passing was also more than up to scratch, I like him.

Good post about the game. Agree with the Macheda comments, he's going to be great for us. Those kids you are on about are probably the same ones who were behind the goals at the Bath friendly. I was totally embarrassed by their non-stop foul-mouthed and anti-English chanting. You know who you are boys so why not try growing up.

Probably the widest pitch I have ever seen in my life. It was almost square!

Everyone is having a go at these lads, but at least they are going to these games and supporting the team.
