The Malky Mackay tape: Listen to ex-Cardiff City manager call for 'zero tolerance' approach to racism in football Aug 26, 2014 07:00 By Gareth Rogers 0 Comments It's Malky in his own words, demanding for the authorities to get tough on racism while speaking during our Blakey's Bootroom show in 2012

The former Cardiff City manager is at the centre of an FA investigation into claims he and ex-Bluebirds right-hand man Iain Moody exchanged texts that were racist, sexist and homophobic.

Two years before the text scandal came to light, Mackay outlined his views on what should happen to racist behaviour in football while taking part in our Blakey’s Bootroom show with Cardiff legend and South Wales Echo columnist Nathan Blake.

Mackay was asked directly about the subject of racism in football after one of his former players, Tottenham’s Danny Rose, had been targeted with monkey chants while playing for England under-21s in Serbia.

The following day Mackay came into our MediaWales studio to appear on the weekly debate show and insisted: “The federations need to come out strongly on it. I don’t think fines work. I really don’t think money makes a difference.

“It’s OK for us, the media and the fans to talk about it but, at the end of the day, that’s just talk.

“The federations are the ones who have got to do something about it and you find certain countries in Europe where it’s absolutely rife and it’s normal behaviour, so we’re not going to change their behaviour overnight. There has to be some sort of punishment attached to it.

“If that’s the way they want to go, they don’t play, they don’t get involved.”

He continued: “Of course it affects the players. You saw Danny Rose, he was distraught.

“I had Danny with me at Watford and he’s a great person. It’s easy to say ‘that’s just something from the stands’ but that’s absolute nonsense.”

Mackay was due to be unveiled as Crystal Palace manager last week, but the text scandal put paid to his hopes of landing the post.

Caretaker boss Keith Millen admitted the furore had left his team “fragile” and said they had the “stuffing knocked out” of them while being thrashed by West Ham.

Millen said: ‘I don’t know how far down the line we were in terms of agreeing for him (Mackay) to be our manager but for this to come out was shocking.

‘It’s not right what has been said. We knew there was something between Iain, Malky and Cardiff when they left but that looked to have settled down. Iain is very good at his job but the stuff out there isn’t right.

‘It’s a shame. Malky is a good football person and a good manager.”

Interesting read - I think he'll eventually manage again. But imo he should step out and say he's done with managing for 'x' years as he spends time with his family as well as goes to some sort of 'help group' or whatever the PR demands of him.

I think that'll be the best course of action for him.

Reap what you sow - man up and accept the consquences - hiding away and having statements only makes it worse.

Anyways the real reason I hope he steps up and says something is because I've had enough of this daily 'banter'
Would like to move on - without reading every other article about this. Much like the 'Spygate' issue I think it needs to be put aside and let the investigation go forward quietly.

But media is media and I very much doubt they'll let this go for a long time. Funny how some reporter's have said off the field antics plagued us last year, yet they are feeding into it with the constant stories. Silly

Anyways looking forward to the game today! Onwards and Upwards!
