On the 4th of September 1967 when I arrived at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich as a fresh faced and very nervous recruit three thing happened in day one that I wasn't expecting. First my name changed from Paul to Taff, secondly I got a marketing strap line, the military version of Sainsburys Goodfood costs less at Sainsburys or Tescos. Every little helps! My strap line was .......Fat Welsh b*stard! also my sexual orientation was realigned from fumbling, inexperienced heterosexual to.......Sheep shagger!
I do not believe that any of my erstwhile comrades were overtly racists or bigots it was just the way it was forty years ago. In fact when we discovered our first "gay in our unit" everybody was very protective of him. "He might be gay but he's our gay!"
I am in no way an apologist for racism or bigotry in any way, I am just wondering if I was joining up today what is acceptable in regard to exploiting differences.......fat, thin? Ginger, blonde? Short, tall? Etc. Calling your foreign employer who is Malaysian a "Chink". Is that deliberately racist or just the action of a stupid, thick, "Jock!" Oops!

To many bleedin hearts nowadays. All the genocide in the world at the mo and they say nothing. Offend someone and they are all jumping up and down demanding those responsible should be beaten within an inch of there lives. They should be made an outcast for as long as there heart is beating. There can not be any forgiveness but I say those without sin cast the first stone.

Mine is a similar story to yours but change it for the RAF and year 1980.
I dont believe Tan was offended but is using this to belittle Malky in our acceptable culture of today. It will stand him in good stead if other things come out.

Hey the way it's going in a few years they'll be remaking the movie '12 years a slave' documenting Rio Ferdinands time at Man Utd!

I remember my father singing this ditty
Chinky chinky Chinaman had a little shop
He sold ginger beer, lemonade and pop
All the children 'round about liked his little shop
Chink chink Chinaman; chop, chop chop.
He would be locked up for it now.
I notice people are saying Tan is Malaysian, but I thought he was born in China,
