The Bluebirds manager admitted his team were far from perfect in the 1-0 win against Wigan but said there is much more to come

Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw his side move to second in the early Championship table and warned that there is still more to come from his men.

The Bluebirds remain unbeaten after striker Nicky Maynard scored the winner in a tough encounter against Wigan, the side he was on loan at last season.

Solskjaer was delighted with the three points and also the performance of his defence against the Latics, admitting the winning habit was a good one to have, even if it was way too early to take any notice of league standings with just three games gone.

“It’s been a good week. This match was not very pretty. We did not play anywhere near the potential there is in the team,” said Solskjaer.

“We lost the ball too easily and cheaply, but the back-five were magnificent. The two full-backs the centre-backs and the goalkeeper. That was the big, big plus for us.

“ I’m not worried about league tables right now. When a team wins games early in the season though it does create a better atmosphere. But at the moment we are just happy we have shown we’ve developed and improved our defending. Especially defending as a unit back there in the box.

“Now it’s about gelling this team together. There’s quite a few news players, we even got two new ones this week. It will take time for us to really play the football we want to. We did not play well. We know we can improve a lot on that.”

Solskjaer handed a first start to centre-half Sean Morrison after he signed this week from Reading and the Cardiff boss said he was delighted with his new man’s debut, also praising fellow defender Fabio.

“Sean is a mature young boy. He’s only 23, but he looks 33 both in stature and the way he played. I’m very pleased,” added Solskjaer.

“He’s a good addition to the squad and had a good debut. He had to recover a few times, use his pace and that was nice to see. Fabio has worked more than ever this summer having played the last 12 or 13 games this season. He’s getting a run of games which he’s never had. He was in and out at Manchester United and it is hard on a boy. When you get a run of games you see the potential in someone.”

Wigan boss Uwe Rosler, meanwhile, was left disappointed and felt his side could well have won the game. He commented “Not many teams will come to Cardiff and dominate like we did. We played 90 minutes dominant, Cardiff were passive, but our problem is getting the ball in the net.”

He's spot on about the winning mentality. The core of this squad is used to losing after last year, gonna take some time to get comfortable winning.

Same for the fans I think.

Agree with that, thought Morrison and Pilkington are 2 great signings Fabio was top form and Jones was also like an EXTRA Center Half, get them all gelling and it be a good BOUNCEBACKABLITY for us.......though where did that 20,000 figure come from...lol

Winning, even when we play a bad game is what will set us apart from the rest.
