Peter whittingham - cardiff city legend

Tue Aug 19, 2014 8:19 am

It surprises me the amount of fans that criticise peter whittingham.

He is our clubs 10 th tall time goalscorer with 79 goals. He also has made 67 assists. He has also made the 10thmost appearances with 340 . He was voted in the Pfa championship team of the year on 3 occasions and has also been the leagues joint top scorer on one occasion. Great statistics by a quality footballer who is one of the best midfielders in the championship. If we were signing someone of that quality we would be over the moon.

I love Whitts, just because he doesn't go diving in to tackles a lot of fans don't appreciate what he does. There's a reason he's been played regularly under every manager we've had, they see more than we do

For me personally I wouldn't describe him as a city legend. Post the 7 occasions he wasn't in the PFA team or 9 seasons he barely scored any goals or assists?

Whitts has the ability to be a world beater but never fulfilled his potential in my opinion. Not constant enough for me a and for big games under Malkay looked no where near good enough for the championship let alone one of the best.

Yes he has the ability to do what he did on Saturday but they are to few and far between apart from the one super season he had.

He only joined us in 2007 and had six full seasons in the championship for us so where do you get the 7 occasions he didn't make the Pfa team? He made it on three out of six times which is fifty percent of the time. I'd be interested to see if you can find any player in the history of the championship who has this success rate over 6 seasons or more. The guy still is only 29. Where was the 9 seasons he barely scored any goals or assists ? 2007/ 2008. 9 goals 8 assists , 2008/ 2009 4goals 6 assists, 2009 / 2010 25 goals 13 assists, 2010/2011 11 goals 10 assists, 2011 /2012 13 goals15 assists, 2012 / 2013 8 goals 5 assists. I personally think they are great statistics for a midfielder in the championship. I would be interested again if you can find anyone who has outperformed him over that many seasons?

That shouldn't have been 10 years. Typo

I'm just saying on to many occasions he has been dire for me to be classed as a legend. Infuriates me as on his day he can tear teams apart.

Those who constantly criticise Whitts for lack of running around or tackling are completely clueless, he is there because he has the best delivery, shot, passing ability in the squad. He is one of our only players who can score from nothing or dead ball situations and has won us many games. I can't remember one game, that he can be held reponsible for losing, but can think of many that he has won for us.

Should be given the Magic hat song........mostly because we need songs. :ayatollah:

Re: Peter whittingham - cardiff city legend

Is it that he just gives the impression he is just meandering around the pitch, not breaking sweat and disappearing from vast chunks of the game and popping up to take corners and free kicks and occasionally having a shot on goal; or is he an integral part of the team?

For me his lack of pace, and lack of involvement for 90 minutes means he should be 2nd choice for games when the opposition are big and strong in midfield, and he should play more in games when the opportunity is there to stroll around and ping off a pass or shot now and again.

Tonight is an example of perhaps him sitting it out and letting Adeyami and Ralls or Gunnarrsson do the leg work in midfield; Wigan probably will paly with 5 in midfield.

Easily a City legend.

Sums up our cabbage when a player can do what he has done and not be considered a legend. For the money we paid too, brilliant. Three assists and a goal in a penalty shoutout in two finals alone should see him there.

City legend in my eyes.

Without doubt, Whitts is a CCFC legend. Not just because of his playing ability, but because of his overall loyalty to the club.

Perhaps if he went around giving V-signs, getting into fights in town, and getting sent off a lot, some people might appreciate him more?

I agree excellent post answering all the negativity around Whitts. He's first choice with every manager we've had for a reason.

Whilst I'm not suggesting he is as good as Hoddle was, he was always criticised for not working hard enough as well. My point being if he's in a balanced team he will shine. Not every player runs around slamming into tackles & getting out of position.
Has his off games like everyone - superb player & would walk into any championship team. We're lucky to have him & I'm glad of his loyalty with so many mercenaries around these days.

Out of interest I have been supporting cardiff for around thirty years and am struggling to think of anyone else in my time who is a bigger legend. Out of interest Can you think of anyone else who deserves this title? People like Jason perry and scott young had more appearances but were not as good and played at lower level, earnie and Carl dale scored more goals but were strikers, players like koumas, kav came in and played well but for shorter lengths and both of them have not as many goals and assists as whitts over their longer entire careers. Be interested to hear any other suggestions. I am not saying he is the best player we have had but has done more for club over prolonged period.

He may not score like he used to but in the last year or 2 his corners really have become a thing of beauty and can get us plenty of goals. I don't get the whitts haters myself I'm always pleased to see his name on the sheet.
