Reading FC defender Sean Morrison to join Cardiff City in £4 million deal

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=145722

getreading.co.uk understands the defender was reluctantly given permission to travel to Wales yesterday afternoon to thrash out terms

The 23-year-old centre-back told Reading boss Nigel Adkins yesterday morning he wanted to talk with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about a switch to the Bluebirds.

And getreading.co.uk understands the defender was reluctantly given permission to travel to Wales later in the afternoon to thrash out terms.

Morrison will become the second Reading player to join Cardiff this summer, following Adam Le Fondre’s £2.5m transfer in May.

A disappointed Adkins said: “Sean came to see me and said he wanted to speak to Cardiff.

“He saw the director of football (Nick Hammond) as well to reiterate what he said to me.

“So via agents, a lot of things have been said.”

It is thought Cardiff will pay Reading £3m up front for Morrison, but the fee will eventually reach £4m with add-ons.

The sale will give Royals a large profit on the £250,000 they spent to bring the defender to the club from Swindon Town in 2011.

Adkins, who confirmed Morrison has not handed in a transfer request, added: “All through the transfer window players become unsettled, history tells us that.

“This is when they can move, be bought or sold. It’s great for the public’s point of view when you can see it all going on. It’s quite entertaining.

“But for us it is disruptive. It’s the reality of football.

“I’m a very positive person and we will deal with this. Our morale will remain high.”

Morrison signed a new contract with Reading in December, tieing him to the club until 2017.

He was a key figure in Adkins’ plans and Reading's manager told the defender he did not want him to leave.

“I want to keep Sean,” said Adkins, whose side host Ipswich Town at Madejski Stadium tomorrow (3pm kick-off).

“He’s played the first two games and done ever so well and I had him in the team again for Saturday.

“But as we all know, one phone call can change everything very quickly.”

He added: “Throughout the transfer window, many clubs will have to trade on players they don’t want to trade on.

“Everyone is aware of mindsets and agents that are involved. It’s a business. So we have to deal with it and move on.”

Absolutely madness fee for an average defender

I really don't think that fee is right. That paper has an agenda with Reading FC.

They are lying about the ALF fee as well so cannot be trusted.

Does seem a bit high. But he is a young player, especially for a CB at only 23 who has a fair bit of first team experience. He also signed a new contract in December so that adds to the cost.

I just don't believe that quote at all. We paid half what they have quoted we paid for ALF. There is no way we are paying £4m for Morrison. That paper is full of ****

Doesn't matter anyway. We've made the money were paying for Morrison in player sales so it doesn't really matter

If it is £4m then so be it.

Looks a great prospect.

Certainly need a quality CB, as IMO Cala is just not good enough, Hudson is too slow now, & Turner cannot distribute. Connolly is the best of a mediocre bunch.

It's quite amazing that people from all forums Cardiff/Reading are taking £4m as gospel.

People just believe the first thing they see these days. Journalism is dead.

Of course it matters. We haven't made money on player sales, we've made losses! Do we want to go down that road again. A fair price would be no more than £2M. I would be surprised if Ole or Tan would be prepared to pay £4M.
