Cardiff City's latest signing is an interesting character, read on to find out exactly what you need to know about Anthony Pilkington

Anthony Pilkington has six caps for the Republic of Ireland
Anthony Pilkington has signed for Cardiff City for what is believed to be a fee of just over £1 million, but what do you know about him?

It seems he left his former club Norwich City on bad terms after manager Neil Adams said he left Pilkington out of the squad because he was injured.

The midfielder then took to Twitter to reveal that wasn't the case.

He's one of us!

Pilkington made it in the game the hard way. Aged 18 he was still playing regular Sunday League football with Greater Manchester club Atherton Collieries after failing to make the grade at youth level at Preston North End, Manchester United and Blackburn.

The big break...

His last game for Atherton was his most memorable as the ‘Colls’ battered FC United of Manchester 3-0 at Bury’s Gigg Lane in a match which sent shock waves through the North West Counties Football League. Pilkington scored all three goals and was snapped up by Stockport straight away.

Sibling rivalry

Pilkington’s younger brother Danny, also a winger, also played for Atherton Collieries and also moved to Stockport. But the brothers’ careers have taken different paths since. Danny has since been at York, Kidderminster and Hereford and is now with Barrow in the Conference North.

Giant-killer

His most famous goal came on November 17, 2012 when his beautiful glancing header at Carrow Road stunned Manchester United and proved the winner for Norwich. It was sweet for the lad who had once been in United’s Academy.

International caps

Blackburn-born Pilkington qualifies for the Republic of Ireland due to his paternal grandmother coming from Dublin, but it took him a long time to make his debut, having to withdraw from the Irish squad four times with injury before finally coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Sweden in a World Cup qualifier on September 6, 2013.

He nearly came to Wales before..

In January the Bluebirds arch-rivals Swansea were interested in Pilkington and were linked with a £3m bid for the player.

Top-flight experience

Pilkington has made 75 Premier League starts for Norwich and came off the bench 17 times in the top flight. He scored 14 goals in the process.

Anthony Pilkington’s future at Norwich City looks decidedly uncertain after the board appointed Neil Adams as the manager for the three seasons. The 48-year-old, who took over for the last five games of the campaign just conclude when Chris Hughton was dismissed didn’t use the Ireland international at all.
“Yeah it’s very frustrating,” said the 25 year-old, who has one year left on his contract at Carrow Road, when asked yesterday about his season generally. “I had a few injuries, one in particular just before Christmas which kept me out for I think 12 weeks. Then I got back and I was available for the rest of it but the manager, you know, had other ideas.”
Pilkington is enthusiastic about the prospect of finishing the season on a high now with Ireland with Martin O’Neill, he says, supportive about the longer term management of another, underlying knee problem that has sidelined him on a number of occasions.
“No, the manager has been really good. He has been in contact all the time. He’s always told me I’ll be in contention and I’ve made myself available whenever possible regarding my injuries. I am looking forward. I am really happy to be here and am looking forward to the games now.”
Keiren Westwood, meanwhile, is looking for a new club with Sunderland opting against the offer of a new deal to the 29-year-old goalkeeper who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury.
