Strategic Steam Reserve

Wed Aug 13, 2014 11:27 am

Any railway enthusiasts out there with any info on possible existence of a Strategic Steam Reserve - a secret stash of Steam locos that were supposedly hidden away in the late 60s/early 70s for use in a post-nuclear war Britain, where diesels and electric locos would have been rendered useless by the effects of electro magnetic pulse?

Any ideas on possible location? Box Tunnel in Wiltshire is a big rumour. London Underground disused tunnels another.

Any thoughts?

Total fiction unfortunately, every steam loco has been accounted for.
There are over a 100 steam loco in working order around the country which could be used. :old:

Interesting.

An urban myth I'm afraid.Yes approximately 100 locks are unaccounted for by paperwork there is simply not any infrastructure left to sustain such an undertaking.

Box tunnel near Bath does have a junction with the Cold War Bunkers of Corsham and if it did exist that's where they'd be on my reckoning.

Incidentally Woodhams in Barry by catalysts standards was small compared to Cashmores Newport and Birds at Heath. However the very first engine scrapped Privately was in a small shed in Energlyn Caerphilly.

Must get my anorak cleaned now. :)

Ah yes Woodhams! Many a memory of sunday mornings going along the lines of 'puffed-out puffers' with my old man and my brother. Also remember seeing a couple of diesels there, a class 21 and a class 41 D600 'Ark Royal' as well as an old British Thomson-Houston class 15 I think it was.
