Chelsea ready for a £30m bid for Mehdi Benatia

CHELSEA are ready to make a £30million bid for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.

With less than a week to go before Chelsea’s opening Premier League game, away to Burnley on Monday night, Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his defence with a move for the Moroccan centre-back.

Benatia, 27, is also being chased by Manchester United but Chelsea are in the driving seat, with inquiries already having been made.

They have switched their attention to Benatia because Real Madrid have indicated so far that French defender Raphael Varane is not for sale and with another target, Atletico Madrid star Joao Miranda, opting to stay in Spain.

Mourinho has still not replaced Brazilian David Luiz, sold to Paris Saint Germain this summer for £50m and he believes that, even though he has Branislav Ivanovic and French youngster Kurt Zouma who could both fill in at centre-back if John Terry or Gary Cahill are injured, he still needs extra cover.

If they push through with a move for Benatia, Chelsea will have to sell at least one foreign player because they will have exceeded their allowed quota under Premier League rules.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech is wanted by Real Madrid and PSG and he would be allowed to go at the right price and midfielder John Obi Mikel is also available.

German winger Andre Schurrle is a target for both Atletico Madrid and PSG and striker Fernando Torres is still wanted by his old club Atletico.

In his case, Chelsea would sell if the price was right, despite public denials and if they could get a replacement.

Cardiff City have announced the signing of striker Danny Johnson from Guisborough Town.

The 21-year-old scored a club-record 59 goals for Guisborough last season, topping the Northern League scoring charts.

Johnson, who started his career at Hartlepool and had a spell at Real Murcia, will link up with the Bluebirds' development squad.
