Ian Holloway slams Millwall fans over ‘obscene’ Jimmy Savile chants


Ian Holloway has hit out at “disrespectful” Millwall fans for winding up Leeds fans about their city’s links to Jimmy Savile.

“I don’t think the chants were right because they’re disrespecting [Savile’s victims]. What he did is an absolute disgrace. Let’s stop and think about what he has actually done, yeah?

“That’s the most important thing and we don’t see it. ‘Oh it’s a bit of banter’. It isn’t funny, is it? I don’t think so. Nobody likes a laugh more than me but I’m respectful, and that’s what I’m trying to show to Leeds United. They’re a great club, they come here with so many fans and want to be treated the same as anybody else. I’ve said it before the game ‘please come to the game, please enjoy yourself, go home safely and here we go let’s have a look at how good our team is. Surely that’s the way forward.”

“We’ve welcomed them to our club, we’ve treated them with the utmost respect. We can deal with it, the West Yorkshire Police obviously can’t because they don’t show us the same respect as we show them.”

Whilst the chants are not particularly nice I've heard far worse. Also Leeds fans are hardly angels themselves. There's a link on that site to the Leeds firm by the Palestinian demo in London and the racial abuse dished out by Leeds is far worse than the mill wall chants.

I thought the Joe Alan's dad chant was class.

Interesting is what he said about west Yorkshire police, and the welcome that Millwall fans receive from them.

Will he be sanctioned for it ?

It happens most clubs.

Leeds fans gave Dave Jones a lot of stick, after the trial had collapsed, and he was cleared of all charges. There's an interesting part in his book 'No Smoke, No Fire' where a female Leeds fan wrote to him complaining that Jonesey has been disrespectful to Leeds by giving their fans a thumbs down, relegation sign. So Jonesey phones her up, and says 'what about all the disgusting abuse you lot gave me throughout the same game'? Some really vile stuff. 'That's just football banter', she replies.

Point is, different chants will amuse and upset different people. There are a few, including by our fans, that I don't like, but it was always like that.

Personally I find it funny but there we go... everyone takes things too seriosuly these days!
