WANDERERS have clinched the signing of Cardiff City striker Joe Mason on loan until January.

The 23-year-old striker spent two spells on loan with the club last season, scoring six goals in 16 appearances.

But his arrival at the Macron Stadium has been stalled after Cardiff insisted he extended his contract – due to run out in 2016 – before he went out again.

Several other Championship clubs are thought to have enquired about Mason’s availability but Wanderers are now hoping to have him registered in time to face Bury in the Carling Cup first round on Tuesday night.

Cardiff City striker Joe Mason has left the club for Bolton on loan until January.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently stressed Mason was part of the club's long-term future but that he would be willing to let him go out on loan again having brought in a host of other strikers.

Dougie Freedman's Bolton - where he previously spent two spells, scoring six goals - have won the race for Mason, where he will spen the first half of the season at least.

Solskjaer said the loan deal was dependent on a new contract with Cardiff being negotiated but news of that deal has yet to emerge.

He had said last month: "Joe has a big future with Cardiff City and we are having talks on a new contract.

“When they are concluded Joe is likely to go out on loan. I want him playing first team football and continuing his development.”

Cardiff paid £250,000 for Mason when they signed him from Plymouth Argyle three years ago and he has scored 15 goals in 35 league starts plus 32 appearance as a substitute.

Cardiff have signed strikers Adam Le Fondre, Javi Guerra and Federico Macheda this summer, as well as welcoming back Nicky Maynard from his loan at Wigan and retaining Kenwyne Jones.

Good move for all.

I'd have used him. If Ole wants to play a 4-3-3 then Mason is far better as one of the wide men in that formation than playing le fondre out there. Would really have liked to see him have a run of games.

Just sell him already. No where near as good as the current bunch and he might as well be renamed Joe Mediocrity.

Cardiff City earlier this evening confirmed that striker Joe Mason will for the third time return to Bolton Wanderers on loan.

The deal is subject to international clearance still but that's never been a problem before, and he has moved to the Trotters on a season long loan and he will no doubt be looking to build on his two spells there last season where he made 16 appearances for them, with a return of six goals.

As part of the loan agreement that sees him have permission to play in the domestic cups for them, he is ineligible to face Cardiff in either of our league games - and presumably should we meet in the Cup I would imagine there is a stipulation there as well.

Having recently signed a new two year extended deal with the club keeping him with us until the summer of 2018, the club wish him the best of luck and success as he continues his development at the club.
