Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he will give squad players an opportunity in the Capital One Cup tie against Coventry.

Solskjaer's side began their Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers.

The Cardiff City manager says there will be changes for Wednesday's League Cup first round tie against Coventry at Northampton's Sixfields Stadium.

"It's a great chance for them to get more minutes," Solskjaer said.

"We need to give game time to a few because we didn't have too many games in pre-season.

"At this point of the season some players need game time more than others and it's a competitive game.

"I'll make sure the ones who missed out in pre-season can get a few minutes."

Midfielder Joe Ralls, 20, is among the players who Solskjaer confirmed will feature against Coventry.

Ralls, who joined as a youngster from Farnborough, has been a loan target for a number of clubs during the close season.

Spanish striker Javi Guerra has suffered an injury setback and will miss Cardiff City’s Capital One Cup tie against Coventry City away on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Guerra suffered a hip injury during the 3-3 draw against Vfl Wolfsburg , but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been confident he would be fit to make his Bluebirds’ debut against the League One Sky Blues.

However, the Spaniard will now sit things out once again as he waits to make his competitive first-team debut.

“Craig Noone and Ben Turner are still a way off and should be back next month.”

Solskjaer regarding Coventry away " At this point in the season some players need game time more than others. It is a competitive game and I will make sure those who lost out in pre-season get playing minutes in this one. It’s a great chance for whoever plays. I didn’t win the League Cup as a player, but you never know what can happen. Early on in the season we need to give game time to a few players. "

" Coventry are a big club themselves and they will be looking forward to the chance of making progress. I played against them many times, they were tough games and this, too, will be tough. "

Monday 11th August 2014

Theophile and Matt Connolly are likely to team up at centre-half against Coventry, while the absence of Hudson and goalkeeper David Marshall, also rested, means Solskjaer will have to decide on a cup captain.

Solskjaer is expected to send out virtually a total different team than that played against Blackburn.

Guerra will be fit for Coventry game, but will they be played?

Is Cala not back for this game or is he still banned?

Think Ralls will get a run out. Hoping O'Sullivan and maybe Wharton do too. Though I'd like to see Eikrem get at least 70 minutes. Don't think Velikonja will start. Mason up top.

Looking forward to this game.

Coventry City to field strongest team possible for Cardiff cup game
Aug 12, 2014 15:40 By Alan Poole

Sky Blues boss Steven Pressley knows a cup run can spark season

Steven Pressley will field his strongest possible team tomorrow tonight as Coventry City take on Cardiff in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in contrast, is likely to make eight or nine changes from the team that launched their Championship challenge with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn on Friday night.

But Pressley is still anticipating a high-octane clash at Sixfields in what he says is a “huge game” for the Sky Blues.

“Every game we play, league or cup, is important to this football club and this one is no different,” he said.

“I know some of the bigger clubs field under-strength teams in the earlier rounds but this is a massive competition for clubs like Coventry.

“Cup runs spark excitement. Just look at Bradford when they got to the final a couple of years ago – the interest their run generated was fantastic, so we’re really looking forward to it.”

Pressley – who has already confirmed that he plans to give Lee Burge an opportunity to press his claims as first-choice keeper – added: “I obviously watched Cardiff’s game on Friday night and listened to Ole’s post-match interview when he intimated there might well be changes.

“I would imagine that’s the case because he’s got a very large squad filled with what you’d consider to be Premier League players so he’ll want to give them game-time.

“In terms of personnel we don’t know exactly what to expect, but we’ve just got to prepare as best we can and make sure we’re as ready as possible.

“Whatever team they field it’s a real test for our lads but one that we certainly don’t fear, that’s for sure.

Wed Aug 13, 2014 6:12 am

Coventry City return to Sixfields for their first "home" game of the 2014/15 season tonight as they take on Championship outfit Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds suffered relegation from the Premier League last term and they started their second tier campaign with a 1-1 draw on Friday night against Blackburn Rovers.

Here's everything you need to know about the Welsh side as the Capital One Cup commences.

Relegation and rebuilding

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unable to keep the Bluebirds in the Premier League last season after taking charge at the start of January.

Of his 21 matches - he saw his side collect five victories, three draws and 13 defeats as they finished rock bottom, six points from safety.

The summer has been spent rebuilding the team for similar surroundings of the Championship with 17 players departing the club and six new arrivals taking their place.

Cardiff have brought in £25m from the sales of Gary Medel (£10m), Steven Caulker (£8m), Jordon Mutch (£6m) and Fraizer Campbell (£1m), while they have spent £4.3m, mainly on Adam Le Fondre (£2.5m) and Tom Adeyemi (£1m).

Ex-Sky Blues

Former Sky Blues favourites Aron Gunnarsson and Ben Turner are currently with the Bluebirds.

Turner will miss the match against Coventry with an ankle injury sustained in pre-season but Gunnarsson is available to feature. The classy midfielder enjoyed three successful years with the Sky Blues, making 133 appearances, before moving to Cardiff in August 2011.

He has since starred in the Premier League with the Bluebirds, playing 23 times in the league last term. Whether he will get a runout tonight remains to be seen.

Ringing the changes

The Bluebirds are expected to rotate their squad for the match against the Sky Blues with one eye on Saturday's league clash against Huddersfield.

Peter Whittingham, Juan Cala, Javi Guerra, Federico Macheda, Kagisho Dikgacoi and Craig Noone join Turner in being ruled out for the game.

Instead Simon Moore will start in goal, promising youngster Declan John will feature at left-back with former Manchester United defender Fabio at right-back.

Kevin Theophile-Catherine will team up with Mark Connolly at centre-half while South Korean international Kim Bo-Kyung, Magnus Eikrem, Guido Burgstaller are all lkely to join youngster Joe Ralls in midfield.

One-time Sky Blues target Adam Le Fondre appears certain to start alongside Nicky Maynard in attack.

Wembley dreams again

In 2012, ex-boss Malky Mackay took the Bluebirds to the Carling Cup final at Wembley and they memorably held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw after extra time.

Unfortunately the Reds were to emerge victorious after a dramatic penalty shoot-out but Cardiff responded by winning promotion during the following campaign. Last season, the Welsh side lost 3-2 to West Ham in the third round of the competition.

As tough as they get

Cardiff were the highest ranked team the Sky Blues could have faced in the Capital One Cup draw after their relegation from the top-flight.

Although the Bluebirds will have several changes from their first league match, the side will still be one full of internationals and the test couldn't be any harder for Steven Pressley's team at this stage of the competition.
