Solskjaer turns to Fergie for 'help'
07 August 2014.

Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned to his old boss Alex Ferguson for inspiration as the former Manchester United striker bids to restore his club to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Solskjaer was a key member of the quartet of strikers, also including Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham, that inspired United's epic treble triumph in 1999 and the Norwegian is hoping his decision to replicate Ferguson's attacking philosophy pays equally generous dividends in south Wales.

After failing to halt Cardiff's plummet towards relegation when he took over in January, Solskjaer begins his first full season in charge of the Bluebirds desperate to make amends by firing his team back to promotion with a barrage of goals.

The lessons of Ferguson's commitment to attack have stayed with Solskjaer and the 41-year-old has signed Spanish forward Javi Guerra, Reading striker Adam Le Fondre and former United prospect Federico Macheda to complement his existing options of Nicky Maynard and Kenwyne Jones.

It looks a group capable of terrorising defences in the second tier and Solskjaer, whose side open the new Championship season at Blackburn on Friday, said: "I was part of a four or five man striking department at United and that is what I'm trying to create here at Cardiff.

"You need a group like that to help push each other on. The competition is very important particularly when it comes to forwards as I found out to my cost sometimes when I was playing."

But with the financial reward for reaching the Premier League now exceeding £100 million ($168 million), Cardiff will face fierce competition for the three lucrative promotion places from a cut-throat division boasting annual attendance totals surpassed only by the English, German and Spanish top tiers.

Fulham have responded to their first season outside the Premier League for 13 years by splashing £11 million on Scotland striker Ross McCormack, whose 29 goals for Leeds last season made him the division's leading scorer.

Yet despite that eye-popping acquisition, questions still remain about Fulham manager Felix Magath, whose disciplinarian style irritated some members of his squad last season.

Norwich, the third of the relegated clubs, surprisingly opted to retain caretaker manager Neil Adams on a permanent basis, and the new boss must hit the ground running, starting with a tricky opening weekend clash at newly-promoted Wolves.

"It's a tough league and it's a long season. It's key we get off to a good start," said Norwich's new midfielder Gary O'Neil, who won promotion from the second tier with QPR last term.

Derby, agonisingly beaten by QPR in the last minute of the play-off final, should also be among the promotion contenders if young midfielder Will Hughes continue to development under former England coach Steve McClaren's astute leadership.

Leeds finished last season in turmoil and not much has changed judging by the howls of anguish emanating from Elland Road supporters following controversial owner Massimo Cellino's decision to hire David Hockaday as boss despite his complete lack of Football League managerial experience.

Nottingham Forest, another sleeping giant yet to stir from its slumber, are also under new management in the form of club icon Stuart Pearce, who responded angrily this week when the club's Kuwaiti owners sold two talented youngsters to Newcastle against his advice.

The first ball hasn't even been kicked, but already the Championship soap opera is underway again.

Sorry, but where does he say that he's turned to Fergie for help?

All I can see is him saying that he wants the same sort of relationship for his strikers, as he had at Man Utd.

Whoever wrote that is clearly just looking for a story from limited quotes.

Don't let that stop the anti-Ole brigade though.

He should be turning to Steve Bruce for advice on getting his team defending properly.

In interviews he's stated he doesn't ask for advice ever since leaving Man Utd.

What a complete load of conjecture and absolute unsubstantiated bollocks. No facts at all.

Nothing there to suggest he has. Maybe picked up some attributes from Fergie as a manager but nothing there to say he did. What would Fergie know about the Championship? All quick to jump the gun.

Why do have such hate for Malky who achieved so much as our manager and love Ole so much who has done nothing (yet)?

I really can't understand your mentality?

Because each manager has an equal amount of responsibility of taking us down. Because Ole has been hounded since day one by the Malky fan boys for being 'Tans Man' when really we were lucky any kind of upcoming manager would want to take over us.

Fully agree, just snippets off a recycled article. Having a wide range of strikers to choose from isn't just a United thing but Ole relates it to his time as a player.

Just because the man delivered promotion on the chairmans money doesn't mean I have to like him? That's why opinions differ. I accept different opinions. I question the opinions of others but I respect them. Tan has done more for Cardiff City than Malky has. I'm someone who isn't affected by the re-brand as I just want to watch my team.

The best form of defence is attack and possession retention. Our problem was keeping the ball. We need players who are comfortable playing out of tight spaces from the back. Last season we were also playing against top level teams who would press high up and force errors like many have done to the likes of Swansea in the past. Swansea do not have a great defence but they do have ball players and people, especially in the middle of the pitch, who can work triangles and create space, all of which is an energy drain on the opposition as they chase the ball.

Our main problem will be getting hit on the break in my opinion. Teams will expect us to go there and try to play and they will sit in deep and break against us. Fortunately Ole has brought in the type of box to box midfielder we need in Adeyemi as he is not afraid to get stuck in or bomb up the pitch to support an attack.

Are you serious?

Hull ended up at 16th place with 7 points more than us last season, 4 points over relegation and -15 in goal difference and you want Ole to learn defending from him?

Nor can I.
This guy just wears blinkers.
I have respect for MM for what he's done & believe he's the best manager the club has ever had & I first started watching City when Scoular was in charge.
I also have respect for OGS & although have some doubts about him wish him well & really hope I'm proved wrong.
But then I, like lots on here, can see the bigger picture.
