Southampton transfers: Jose Fonte pledges future to Saints and refuses to join summer exodus
Cardiff-target defender confirms there have been offers for him but boosts new boss Ronald Koeman by opening talks about a new contract
Jose Fonte has pledged his future to Southampton after refusing to join the player drain from St Mary's.
Portuguese defender Fonte, 30, has given new manager Ronald Koeman a boost by opening talks to extend his Saints deal which runs out next summer.
Cardiff made two bids for Fonte and Hull were also interested in adding to Southampton's misery by luring him to Yorkshire.
Fonte said: " I am in negotiations to renew my contract. There have been offers from other clubs but I feel happy at Southampton."
Former Benfica product Fonte , who joined Saints from Crystal Palace four and a half years ago, said the loss of several key players would be hard to overcome.
"Ronald Koeman already knew he was going to lose some players. Of course he can't be very happy with the situation but he has already signed three quality players.
"We still need another three or four more. The players who have arrived have brought competitiveness.

I hoped he would have signed him - seems a good player,but you right Carl - we have more irons in the fire

Was always going to be the case id say. Was setting up my fantasy footy team the other day and went to defenders, sort by points last year, and Fonte was one of the best in the league.

Had we gone above our bid it would have been an insanely bad gamble signing for a Championship Club. Our offer apparently was £35,000 per week on a three year deal. The guy is 31 in december (I think).
