Played 61 league games, scored 27 goals.

That's what Ive been told. Lesson learnt, don't sell, before you can replace.

One of my favourite City players.
Certainly hit the ground running, scoring 4 on his debut.
He lived in Radyr and used to catch the train into the ground on match days - we'd all be sat on the same train, staring at him but not able to get the courage up to talk to him

Saw him score 4 against Carlisle with his arm bandaged up, took him off after is last goal. Fred Dewi was chairman in those days and the rumour going around was that he didn't want promotion due to extra wages and other costs, there was no money in foot ball then as it is today. If he had bought warboys to play along side toshack then we would have walked it, Brian Clarke was past his best at the time (city legend) and tosh needed support. Hope that helps.

As above, really. The gap between selling Toshack and buying Alan Warboys probably cost us promotion.

That rumour about not wanting to be promoted lasted for decades. Almost certainly true.

I heard my mates uncles talking about the board not wanting promotion hence they delayed getting a replacement for Toshack. I didn't understand it all then....happy days.
Saw Warboys play a few times but don't recall him doing much. Remember Clarke scoring his 100th goal same seaon Warboys came though.

Sorry to nit pick but he didn't score 4 on his debut.I think he scored 2.It was against his former club Sheffield Wednesday who were not best pleased and said he never played like that for them. He did famously go on to score 4 against Carlisle later in the season. Fantastic old fashioned centre forward. Big, powerful, aggressive and a goal scorer. If Kenwynne had his attitude he'd tear the Championship apart.

That game was a 4-0 win v Carlisle Utd, on March 06, 1971.
Alan Warboys debut was on the 26 December 1970, a 1-1 home draw v Swindon Town. On his second home game, Jan 09,1971, v Sheffield Wed, he scored 2 goals, in a 4-0 win. He then scored two away goal v Pompey, 16/01/71, & one goal away to Hull City 27/02/71.
I think J Toshack was sold early November 1970, not sure of the exact date, but certainly after the away game v Nantes, Ecwc on Nov 04, where he scored a goal.

I remember the Carlisle game. Scored a hat trick after 9 minutes of the game, and a 4th before half time. As I remember, at least 2 of the goals came from Bobby Woodruff long throws which the Carlisle centre half Colin Balderstone misjudged severely. Balderstone used to play county cricket in the summer and football in the winter!

Thanks, & all very interesting reply's, pretty consistent to what i have been told in the past.
One thing is for sure, we should have been promoted in 1971, if only because four seasons later we were relegated.
How far sighted was that, fourty years ago???

Someone I knew at the time himself on the books said he came off at Carlisle because he had a massive hangover and was sick in the dressing room at half time.Generally known to be a massive pisss-head,something that was not so frowned upon all those years ago.Went on to make a name for himself at Bristol Rovers too being one half of a partnership nicknamed Smash and Grab. Now for 10pts can you name the aforementioned player

.

Wasn't Tosh sold after the Hull game where we thrashed them 5-1 to replace them at the top?
Thu Aug 07, 2014 6:11 am
Not quite, the hull game was the last time he scored, an hat trick in fact, his last game was his next game away to QPR where he flicked on to Leighton James who scored with a volley, the only goal of the game. Terry Venables missed a penalty earlier on. Great days out.

I was lucky enough to have been there when he scored four against Carlisle, I had a season ticket in the Canton Stand at the time.

Saw him play many times.
You here commentators say someone is like an 'old fashioned centre forward', well this was Warboys!

I thought that too, if my memory serves me correctly he scored a ha-trick as well. Didn't Alan Warboys have a throw better than Leggy? Or am I finally cracking up.

Bobby Woodruff was the long throw specialist, like an arrow.

One of my favourite ever City players. Formed a cracking partnership with Bannister at Bristol Rovers, they were known as smash and grab. Last I heard of Warboys he was driving lorries or something back up north.

For the records, Alan Warboys dubut was a home game v Swindon Town on 26 December 1970. His first goals for City were a home game later v his previous club, Sheffield Wed on the 9 January 1971, scoring two in a 4-0 win.
The famous four goal game was a home game v Carlisle on the 6 March 71.
Alan's last City game was a home game v Aston Villa on the 9 September 1972. He signed for Sheffield Utd in a deal that brought Dave Powell & Gil Reece to Ninian Park.
In all, Alan played 61 league goals for City, scoring 27 goals.
