Paul Abbandonato: Why Jordon Mutch was comfortably Malky Mackay's number one signing for Cardiff City

Goal scoring midfield powerhouse will be missed, but his absence opens up options for the more skillful Mats Moller Daehli

When Malky Mackay’s transfer dealings are debated in future years, there are eight million reasons why the spectre of Andreas Cornelius will always be held out as a stick with which to beat him.

In the eyes of many Cardiff City also paid way over the top for Gary Medel, but thanks to chairman Mehmet Dalman’s stubborn streak it seems the Bluebirds will recoup their £11m from Inter Milan.

They have also broken even on Steven Caulker, who usurped £8m Dane Cornelius as Cardiff’s record signing last summer.

Yet for every Andreas Cornelius, or Peter Odemwingie, or Etien Velikonja there have been successes as well. Craig Bellamy, Ben Turner, Fraizer Campbell, Kim Bo-Kyung, Craig Noone amongst them.

Leading light
Without doubt, though, the leading light when it comes to Mackay transfer dealings has been Jordon Mutch.

When he signed for £2m in June 2012, there were lots of raised eyebrows about how a Championship club had landed an England under-21 starlet with such rich potential.

That they did was probably down to the fact that Mutch had a chequered injury history and bigger clubs than Cardiff weren’t so willing to take a chance.

Indeed, Mutch’s first year with the Bluebirds was wrecked by a foot problem to such an extent that he only made one 90 minute appearance, in a 2-0 win at Millwall, before Easter.

But once his fitness was up and running, Mutch displaced Peter Whittingham in a new-look midfield next to Kim Bo-Kyung and Aron Gunnarsson and helped give Mackay’s team new dynamism which saw them roar over the Championship title-winning line.

With Kim, he was expected to be a key figure in the historic Premier League campaign. Whereas Kim disappointed though, Mutch’s stock rose and rose, to such an extent that the Bluebirds are able to treble their money in selling him to Queens Park Rangers.

' Cardiff loss, QPR's gain '

Mutch will be missed, have no doubts about that. With Caulker, Medel and Campbell also departing, it leaves only David Marshall from the spine of the team which played last season.

Cardiff’s loss is very much QPR’s gain because Mutch combines power with precision, a highly effective cocktail for modern day football.

He can surge Yaya Toure-like on runs through the midfield, but is also an able passer short or deep. Throw into that equation too his physical presence in either penalty box and that knack of popping up to score goals and you can understand why QPR, and Sunderland for that matter, wanted to take Mutch back into the Premier League.

He bagged seven goals for struggling Cardiff last season – including four against Liverpool and Chelsea – and QPR will expect double figures from the swashbuckling midfielder this season. You can forgive the player for believing his ability deserves a higher stage than the Championship.

Yet ironically, the impending departure of Mutch also presents an opportunity to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In the top flight, Mackay picked Mutch in the number ten role just behind the striker, believing he was at his best linking with Fraizer Campbell and doing damage in and around the opposition goal.

Solskjaer too chose Mutch in that position before, perversely in my eyes, deeming it was one which suited the more combative Aron Gunnarsson towards the end of the relegation campaign.

Gunnarsson was like a fish out of water. Hopefully that’s an experiment we have seen the end of.

Mutch wasn’t, but you still sensed he wasn’t at his best with his back to goal. He was more suited to a deeper role, using his athleticism and physical attributes to rampage box to box, with Kim deployed in the hole.

Best signing in terms of profit by some distance.

He had a very good season last season until he gave up and then looked disinterested so I didnt have much hope for him this season in the championship and I think we got maximum price for him.

The sell on clause is disgusting and I'm ashamed that this man was allowed free reigns alongside the squirmy c**t that is Iain Moody to mug this club off, yeah Jones pocketed a fair bit of money out of us over the years but at least he generated the club profit with his signings.

On this topic though, he was his best signing. Glad he got over his injury problems to feature for us

I swear half the praise of Mutch is based on his highlight reels, and not full 90 minute matches. He drifts in and out of games, and I personally do not view him as a "battler," as that implies he's out there making more crucial tackles than he actually does.

He's a good player, but he's a luxury player. Best of luck to him though.

if the sell on clause part is right then its not very good from malkys point of view, not much of a profit either

Former Birmingham City midfielder Jordon Mutch is set for a £5m move to QPR from Cardiff, and it could mean a nice payout for Blues.

The former Blues youngster signed for Cardiff on 22nd June 2012 for a fee of around £1m.

At the time of the transfer Birmingham City's acting chairman Peter Pannu said that the deal had a "heavy sell-on clause".

Mutch moved to St Andrew’s from Derby County in the summer of 2007, having been loaned out to several clubs during his early Blues career, Mutch became more and more important last season and made 29 appearances, including 20 starts.

Those games brought two goals, most notably the second in the 3-1 Easter win at Burnley with only a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

In total Mutch made 36 senior appearances for Blues after becoming the club’s second-youngest debutant when he came off the bench in the 2008 League Cup tie with Southampton aged just 16.

I did like Mutch, but i also believe he did drift in and out of games. But you cant go wrong have match winners like him in your squad!

Blew hot and cold for me.

On his day outstanding - his 2nd half display v Newcastle at home was awesome but on other days he was a passenger.

Pity for him he's going to a weak club. I think he'll just drift through next season.

£3m by all accounts hardly surprising as we only paid £1m for a very bright talent back then

He wasn't going to sign a new deal anyways so best to get rid recoup a small profit and move on

Why Jordon Mutch’s departure will hurt Cardiff City more than Steven Caulker, Gary Medal and Fraizer Campbell combined
By
Haydn Gleed
Tuesday 5 Aug 2014

Towards the end of last week, I was completely out of the Cardiff City rumour loop. With my work schedule and my birthday to prepare for (I’m still waiting for my cake from the Metro), I was oblivious to the heartbreaking news that Jordon Mutch was looking like he is about to move to QPR.

Indeed, up to Saturday morning I was of the firm belief that we would go up to the Premier League at the first attempt, now I’m starting to have doubts.

I met up with my mate on Sloper Road and we made our way to the ground to watch the pre-season game against Wolfsburg, and he asked if I had heard about Jordon leaving for £5 million.

I dismissed it instantly. We had heard it before when Sunderland came in, but the club rightfully turned around and said no. I checked my phone, read some news stories and my heart sank. It looked like QPR are serious about getting him, and as I write this it looks more and more likely it will happen.

I am gutted.

From the first time I saw him play for City against Newcastle in a pre-season friendly a couple of years ago, it was obvious this lad was something special. He has pace, an eye for a pass, strength, a hell of a strike on him with both feet the lot. In short, you don’t get players like him coming along very often. The only issue he had was his unfortunate knack of picking up niggling injuries.

It seemed to me that he was our hidden gem that wasn’t respected or appreciated outside of CF11, and that was fine with me. Indeed, David Moyes showed himself up last season by suggesting the pass Jordon put through for Campbell to score against Manchester United was a fluke.

I believe he said something to the affect of, 99 times out of a 100 he wouldn’t have been able to do that. Strange that David as we had seen him do it on more than one occasion for City. How is he in a managerial job if he doesn’t recognise the talent? Oh wait nevermind…

It seems now that his ability is being appreciated further afield, and Harry Redknapp certainly knows a good player when he sees one. Out of all the exit’s this summer, this one will hurt the most. For what a fully fit Jordon Mutch can bring to the table is irreplaceable. Fraizer Campbell we have Adam Le Fondre, Steven Caulker we could possibly have Fonte, Gary Medel we have Peter Whittingham to fill that role in the Championship.

Mutch’s potential replacement? I haven’t seen enough of Kagisho Dikgacoi yet to know what he brings to the team.

I do wish Jordon all the luck in the world, as he is another player who seemed to give his heart and soul every time he stepped onto that pitch. I know he has to do what’s best for his career, but this could be a devastating blow to Ole’s plans.

If we are only getting £2M we may as well have kept Mutch.

I am slowly but surely losing my respect for Malky in the transfer market. No wonder no other club has come in for him.

Now confirmed on our website that Mutch is a Ranger! :bluescarf:

Still, as with Caulker, when we swap divisions next season we can swap squads as well (on the proviso that you do take SWP).

We didn`t pay 1mill. As you see in the interview Mutch is replying to how he feels about being a 2mill record signing.

We paid 2 mill for him. Sold him for 6. And 3 of those goes to Birmingham if what i read is true.

That means we got a 1mill profit on him due to the sale on fee. I think it`s a crime towards our club to be so incredibly bad at transfer dealings as Malky was!! Didn`t think about the clubs future at all!

But still Malky`s best signing tho if we look at profit  Fistpump!

Where has this 50% sell on clause come from? I find this incredible if true!

So according to this thread, Malky was the person who inserted the clauses and signed off the transfer deals, with Tan sitting back and having absolutely no say in a single deal Malky did?
