The Bluebirds have accepted an improved £6m bid from Rangers boss Harry Redknapp, with Mutch expected to complete his move this week

Jordon Mutch is on the verge of joining QPR after travelling to London for a medical.

The Bluebirds have accepted an improved £6m bid from Rangers boss Harry Redknapp, with Mutch expected to complete his move this week.

The departure of one of the Bluebirds’ best players is undoubtedly a blow, but they will be content with a £4m profit on a player who’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old, who signed from Birmingham for £2m in 2012, is due to undergo his medical on Tuesday morning.

City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already moved to replace Mutch with a player who has Premier League experience, but that deal may not be completed in time for Friday’s Championship opener at Blackburn Rovers.

But the Bluebirds do expect to unveil a new defender before that match as Solskjaer looks to complete his summer dealings.

Like Mutch, midfielder Gary Medel has played his last game for the club and is expected to join Inter Milan as soon as the two club’s agree on the structure of the £10m transfer fee.

The Italian club want to pay over three or four years and City, while Cardiff are keen to receive more money up front.

The priority for Solskjaer is to strengthen City’s defence, where Mark Hudson and Matt Connolly are the only available centre-backs with only four days left before the match at Blackburn.

Juan Cala is suspended from Friday’s match, while Ben Turner is rated doubtful after suffering an ankle injury at Yeovil Town.

Hudson, meanwhile, continues to be linked with a move to Leeds United, although Cardiff are adamant he will not be going anywhere until they have signed replacements.

Cardiff chiefs have identified two defenders they want to sign and are hopeful of landing at least one of them in time for the Blackburn trip.

Southampton’s Jose Fonte and Manchester United’s Michael Keane are no longer in the frame because neither are available immediately.

Both Solskjaer and Dalman have been to mainland Europe on scouting missions in recent weeks, and they have made bids for two players.

The Bluebirds were linked with former Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra, but has now signed for Arabian Gulf League club Fujairah.

Bougherra, 31, was a free agent after leaving Michael Laudrup’s Qatari side Lekhwiya in May, but, while Cardiff have watched the Algerian captain, he was not among their leading targets.

Queens Park Rangers set to add Cardiff’s Jordon Mutch

Cardiff City’s disappointing season in the Premier League couldn’t diminished the promise of Jordon Mutch, a 22-year-old midfielder who scored seven goals during his return to the top flight. Now, while the Bluebirds go back to life in the second division, Mutch has been given more time in the first division, with Queens Park Rangers pulling the Birmingham City product into an already deep midfield.

According to multiple sources out of England, the Rs have agreed to terms with Cardiff on Mutch’s move, with reports putting the fee at between $8.4 and $10.1 million. Provided he passes his Tuesday medical, Mutch becomes the second Cardiff player to join Queens Park this summer, following in the footsteps of defender Steven Caulker.

Capable of playing through the middle or on the left, Mutch joins an enviable collection of midfield talent; at least, enviable compared to the typical talent coming up from the second tier. Between Joey Barton, Jermaine Jenas, and Karl Henry, QPR already has a number of players with Premier League experience to man the middle. Alejandro Faurlín is returning from loan, while Adel Tarrabt, Junior Hoilett, and Matt Phillips provide attacking options. Queens Park may have been in the Championship last season, but they have a number of options.

What makes Mutch different is his age. Whereas QPR has spent the last few years collecting veterans who’ve trickled down the ladder, Mutch combines hope for the future with somebody who’s already had success at the top-level. Should Barton become a problem or Harry Redknapp want a more versatile player than Henry, the Rs will have options, particularly if tougher competition forces them to play five in midfield.

If anything, the Rangers seem overloaded. With players like Mutch coming in, perhaps Barton or Tarrabt are set to move on. Thanks to purchases like today’s, though, Queens Park can afford to pursue some return on their more established stars.

Jordon Mutch should complete his move to QPR by Wednesday[GETTY]

Mutch, who scored seven goals in 37 appearances last season, is valued highly at Cardiff but the club have accepted an increased offer for the 22-year-old.

The former Birmingham player will follow £8m man Steven Caulker out of Cardiff to Loftus Road after the defender signed for Harry Redknapp's men last month.

Redknapp is also close to sealing defender Mauricio Isla from Juventus on a season-long loan deal.

Isla's arrival would be QPR's third addition to their defensive ranks after Caulker and former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand.

And Redknapp's hopes of keeping want-away striker Loic Remy appear to be increasing as rival interest in the striker cool's following his failed medical with Liverpool.

Meanwhile, the exodus at Cardiff is set to continue with Chile World Cup ace Gary Medel close to a £10m transfer to Inter Milan.

Medel played in all four games in Chile's World Cup campaign off the back of 35 domestic appearances with the Bluebirds.

Jordon's Mutch happier in the top flight! QPR sign Cardiff midfielder
HARRY REDKNAPP reckons Jordon Mutch can hit the heights at QPR after sealing a £6m move from Cardiff.

The midfielder impressed in the Premier League last season, scoring seven goals despite the Welsh club suffering relegation.

And Hoops boss Redknapp believes the 22-year-old will only get better after Mutch agreed a four-year deal.

Redknapp said: "Jordon's a fine young player, with a big, big future.

"He's already shown what he can do at this level with Cardiff last season with a decent goals return and this move will provide him with a great platform to take his game on to the next level.

"He wants to learn and improve his game. He's a good pro with a great attitude and this is a big opportunity for him at QPR."

Mutch said: "I thought I had a good first season in the Premier League last year with Cardiff, so I was delighted when QPR came in for me and offered a route back to the top-flight."
