John Brayford is staking a strong claim to be Cardiff City's first choice right-back, says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former Derby County defender has been a regular Solskjaer selection during pre-season and was outstanding during Cardiff's 4-1 win against Yeovil Town away in their latest match.

"John will play an important part for us this season," said Solskjaer, with the opening Championship match at Blackburn Rovers less than a fortnight away.

Cardiff's final pre-season fixture is at home against German club Vfl Wolfsburg this Saturday and Brayford looks certain to start again.

Former manager Malky Mackay signed Brayford from Derby for £1.5m a year ago, but was left on the sidelines.

Frenchman Kevin Theophile took the Premier League right-back role with Brayford effectively frozen out.

He has yet to make a League debut, but is hot favourite to start against Blackburn.

"John has never really played for Cardiff City," says Solskjaer. "He went out on loan last season and did well for Sheffield United. We know exactly what he can do at Championship level and I can see why Nigel Clough, his manager at United and Derby, is keen on him.

"John will play an important part for us this season. He is a full-back who goes forward really well, while the defensive job he has done is better than I hoped for. He is an extremely good full-back."

Sheffield United manager Clough is keen to sign Brayford again for the new season, but he looks certain to be Solskjaer's first choice.

Still don't get why malky let Brayford rot after paying decent money for him, easily one the best full backs at championship level, don't know now if he could of cut it at prem level, maybe malky thought he couldn't but why buy him in the first place

Apparently Sheff Utd want to buy him for 2m. Not bad considering we bought him for 1.75m. Tiny bit of profit if he did leave but hope he stays :ayatollah:

With Jones, Brayford and Connolly back in the picture it's like having 3 new signings. All potentially top players at this level
