' Deal now not looking likely '

Southampton

Cardiff's chances of signing Jose Fonte appear to be fading, due to a couple of reasons.

I believe that Southampton have just appointed the 30 year old as club captain, in the hopes of keeping him, but they've also slapped a transfer fee on him that far surpasses what we've so far offered and seen rejected.

Several bids have reportedly been made for Fonte, all of which have been turned down with the most recently £3.25m.

Southampton say they want nothing less than £5 million and at the same time have offered Fonte an improved contract.

Fonte is well proven in the Championship, with him not out of place in the Premier League either, but even if he were willing to drop down a level again to sign for us I can't see us parting with some £5m for him, which is the amount Southampton have reportedly quoted us!

Steven Caulker needs replacing, and Fonte would be an adequate replacement, but I'm sure we could find someone just as good for a lot less and would be surprised if OGS continued this pursuit with the board also unlikely to sanction such a move.

Fair do's time to move on then I reckon. Like you say, plenty of others out there.

Pay £5m and make him our captain. This guy could sure up our leaky defence and be the difference between going up or not as proven at championship level. :bluescarf:

The next move will be by Fonte. Southampton are throwing everything at him to stay apart from a contract that suits him.

With Southampton's squad being picked apart and a new regime, perhaps this will also give him concern.

What we do know is Fonte will be free to sign a pre-contract in January and Southampton will lose him for nothing should he not sign the contract they have put to him.

Ay, no resell value.

But as we all agree, our defense setup (what imo we know from pre-season and last season) is not good enough. How much is promotion worth?

Based on what we have seen from Ole so far, he will either just walk away and not be held to ransom, or will say to Dalman and co... Get him no matter what...

Personally I think they will move on to another target...

(Harry Maguire £3m hint hint )

Hull got quoted 4m for Maguire who's more of a gamble cos he's never played at that level,I'd spend the money on fonte, this story is from vital football and is a load of shit,he might not come to us but it won't be cos he's been made captain

£4m, that's right and Brucey told em to jump eh!!

Personally I would rather take a risk on a youngster with potential resale value.

I am not sure who ole can get that has this quality and is open to a move
The other target keane, is on tour with man united and it's unclear if he will be in their squad.
Next season.Time is running out, I would up the bid for fonte.

You don't need resale value when you can easily be the difference between going up and staying down. QPR was full of oldies the year they went up and they netted a windfall in cash. If we don't sign him and just miss out some of those saying about resale value will then say we should have signed him. He's proven and could easily be the difference.

It looks like it now won't happen.

Time to move on. When you think about it £5m is a lot of money for a 30 year old centre-back.

Michael Keane apparently travelling to the UK to discuss a season-long loan to us.
