I agree there have been bigger losses of life in other parts of the world, but generally not where our government has sided with the main aggressor - the one responsible for over 1000 deaths in 2 weeks, most of them civilians and almost 200 children.

If you want to discuss the issues around ISIS/Iraq/Syria or other places of mass murder and crimes against humanity I'm sure 'lefties' will be happy to share their views. However, this example of mass murder and crimes against humanity has dominated the TV and press for the last 3 weeks so it is no surprise we are discussing it - especially given the influence and role of the USA, UK and European Union in the eventual ceasefire or truce - and the terms of it.

You seem to be sickened by a lot of words - including 'racist' and 'genocide' - especially if they are justified - but very happy to throw around 'anti-semitic' at the first suggestion that someone doesn't slavishly follow the latest propaganda line from Tel Aviv? In your embarrassing (drunken?) attack on me a few days ago you managed to accuse me of racism for pointing out your 100% support for a racist stereotyping of Arab families, to constantly present HAMAS as the face of civilian Palestinians (so justifying their mass murder and collective punishment by the Israeli armed forces) and then accused me of 'hiding behind HAMAS (an organisation I totally oppose) although you were the one hiding behind them, and then ended up with a vomit of a post accusing people who disagree with you and your slavish support for the Israeli government as 'scum of the earth'.

There is a case to be made for a future that gives Israelis (Jews and non-Jews) security, and gives Palestinians human rights and freedoms that the Israeli state has denied them (at least since 1967 if not 1948). There is a need to understand and get through the way Israel was created (ethnic cleansing, mass killings and displacement of people who were not supposed to be there in'the land without people') and also the racist and jihadist response of organisations like HAMAS. What depresses me is that we rarely get that adult discussion from you and your mates.

It is there on both Israeli opposition and 'loyalist' websites though, as well as Palestinian ones. Serious debate of very serious issues.

If there is to be peace there will have to be concessions on all sides - not just Israel and the Palestinians, but the other political players (USA, EU, Egypt, Russia, Iran, etc).

We all have to understand the different ways that the main parties view the conflict and why - educate ourselves about the viewpoint of people we agree with and those we don't. The Jon Snow (Channel 4) video piece that has been widely circulated over the last day is a powerful appeal to ordinary people around the world to be part of the solution - not just passive onlookers.

You have quoted Yasser Arafat from 1993 - and that was an important piece of the picture - but so was the start of the Zionist movement in the late 19th century, the Mandate, the events of 1948, 1967, 1973 and the various military and 'civil policing' actions of Israel and responses from the Palestinians (either resistance or terrorism depending on which dictionary we use).

As far as I understand it the only options that have any support are: continue the cycle of bloodshed and fear and desperation (HAMAS or others slinging rockets and rhetoric at Israel; Israel 'mowing the grass' by killing hundreds of Palestinians in a new incursion every 2 years - the default position of the Israeli government and HAMAS), a 2 state solution based on a new autonomous (and democratic) Palestinian state on the west Bank and Gaza with no blockade (that is the inernational peace 'template' but maybe that also goes back to your Arafat quote?), or a single state future with equal rights and guarantees for peaceful co-existence in a new Israel/Palestine. The last one is the best hope for sustainable peace but cuts across the generations-long hatred and dispair of the Palestinians, and the vision and ideology of Zionism. At least this time around there has been much more genuine discussion around the world through the internet than ever before - and the story isn't controlled by the 2 main protagonists or the established media.

However, there is a longstanding association between the broad range of leftists in the West/UK and the Palestinians eg= baader meinhof/socialist workers party/guardian newspaper/channnel4.

The left just love the islamofascists (until they come after gays) as they have much in common and as far as the UK is concerned anti- Britishness is top of their anti list. Part explains the immigration open doors of the last 20 yrs.
