' The curious case of Gary Medel '

Sat Jul 26, 2014 3:26 pm

Firstly, it's very encouraging that Cardiff City FC for possibly the first time in our history aren't being held to ransom over their best players, especially when we're dealing with several of Europes big guns like Inter. If this latest rumour is true about the possibility of Medel staying another season, then personally if that happens the bookies making us clear ante post favourites for going straight back up will be justified

Medel post Christmas has received some justified criticism ( I've joined in with it at times), but there was i believe around the time of Malkys departure major problems for Gary Medel in regards to his personal life. Allegedly there was a lengthy time when he wasn't allowed to see his children. I'm not defending him 100% but if this was true then his remarkable drop in form could be interpreted in different ways. He's in a foreign land where he can't speak the language, the manager who brought him to the club has been fired and he's not allowed any contact with his loved ones. If all that was true, then it doesn't matter how much money you're on, as you saw in the World Cup, the guy has a huge heart and domestic issues are coped with differently for everyone

I'd love a chance for us to keep him. When his head was right he was the best footballer this club has ever seen. International class of the highest level, as we witnessed in Brazil

Lakey, going through such a situation is tough for anyone to handle and handle it without it interfering with your work or daily routine.

Knowing this makes me sympathetic to his displays post Christmas.

At last some sense when it comes to Medel, so many of our fans have slated him over the months when he is clearly one hell of a coup for a club like Cardiff City.

Great to see you posting again to.

This is true. I'd love him to stay too, but not as a CB

PS, i forgot to say what a breath of fresh air seeing the board back to some kind of football related order. No prizes for guessing what has escalated the improvement.

top post, but I still can't see him playing CB here as he will get bullied in this league!

would still want him to stay though, great player on his day!

After Medel went off against Sunderland then Arsenal, costing us a win and a draw it was clear he wasn't fit and was carrying an injury. He then came off v Wigan with a knock which cost us an fa cup run and then the Hull disaster. I firmly believe he came back too. Quickly each time he was injured and was only 75% fit after Christmas at best. We were so poor without him that even unfit he had to play.

Good post lakey, i feel medel will be our best player this season by far in the championship, if and a big IF we can keep him that will only harden our chances of us going back up :bluescarf:

Amen to the board clean up.... :ayatollah:
I stopped bother to even read threads as I could see who was the last poster so knew it wasn't worth it usually, in the end you don't even bother logging on which was tragic as one thing we need at the moment is fan unity and we all known certain people thrived on making it worse.

I'm not quite sure what everyone's opinions are of Mehmet Dalman, but I seem to trust him more than the others in the Cardiff Hierarchy. In the past we have lost quality players for peanuts, in my opinion the 4.8 million for Ramsey was still a slap on the face. But, its about time our club is longer taken by ransom by bigger clubs, pay up or pi## off.

City Gent,

Thank you for showing that players are still people, like us, affected by the same life-situations. I, for one, hopes he stays. He will become a true hero at City if he does.

StT.

Re: ' The curious case of Gary Medel '

I agree with the OP that Gary Medel is (one of) the best players we've ever had at CCFC.

I would like him to stay but I'm certain he'll be gone by the end of the transfer window.

If he were to stay though it could cause a selection dilemma in regard to our strikers. For me Medel is a holding midfielder. He is certainly not a box to box midfielder who is comfortable carrying the ball vast distances and dribbling past players. So to use him properly he belongs in a 4-5-1 or a 4-3-3 formation which means playing just one central striker. And we have too many quality strikers as it is, and you might say too many goal scorers/match winners to leave out of the team. Only Macheda could be effectively used out wide to adapt to a 4-3-3 but he's better through the middle.

So unless Ole plans on playing 3-5-2 Van Gaal style where Medel would be very effective in defence without the worry of his lack of height, then I just don't see how he fits anymore. He is not the perfect fit that he was with the way Malky set us up.

That's my 5 pence...

We could do with him in front of our centre halfs but he's no centre half.He got exposed badly against the euro teams in the World cup.
Not sure how his personal family issues will be solved by going to Inter?

Probably a few points we have missed here, firstly he don't want to be with Cardiff and secondly how does his style of football work within the British game.

Good to have you back on the forum Mate

It would be fantastic if we could keep Medel, he was a key player in the World Cup !!!

I wasn't aware he couldn't see his children. Was that because of an ex-wife / legal situation or something else ? Has it now been resolved ?

If that was the case for his drop in form last quarter then I'd be very happy to have him here, as long as these problems have been resolved.

Gary Medel is the BEST player City have ever signed, if supporters cant see that then they should not be calling themselves football supporters. His form might have deteriorated somewhat after Christmas but when you're playing with inferior players around you then your form is bound to be dragged down, just look at what he did in the World Cup, says it all.

Loads of footballers have personal issues. For the money we paid his performances on the whole were not good. Id rather recoup £6m big ones rather than lose £2m a year paying his wages. Digkacoi is an able replacement for this level.
