Cardiff City 3-2 TSV 1860 Munich: Etien Velikonja pops up with late goal to secure pre-season win for Bluebirds

In the closing stages of the pre-season friendly in Austria, forgotten man Etien Velikonja popped up to win the game against Bundesliga 2 outfit TSV 1860 Munich
Cardiff City 3-2 TSV 1860 Munich
Scorers: Federico Macheda 23; Peter Whittingham 30, Etien Velikonja 88 - Christopher Schindler 28; Max Wittek 37.
Slovenian striker Etien Velikonja, the forgotten man of Cardiff City, struck a Bluebirds winner in his first appearance of the season.
The scores were level at 2-2 at the SVK Stadium in Austria when Velikonja was sent on for Macheda - and fired home at the far post from man of the match Mats Daehli’s low cross.
Velikonja scarcely figured in former manager Malky Mackay's plans, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to give the young hit-man his chance to shine this season.
City went ahead twice during the first half, but 1860 fought back each time and it was 2-2 at half-time.
The impressive Federico Macheda fired home from a chance created by Peter Whittingham after 23 minutes. The shot was fierce and goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly was helpless.
The teams immediately had a drinks break and then the Bundesliga 2 outfit levelled the scores when Christopher Schindler netted with a downward header on 28 minutes.
It was Whittingham who fired Cardiff ahead again on the half hour, whipping a free-kick towards goal and watching in delight as keeper Kiraly made a hash of trying to collect. The inswinger slipped under his body and into the net.
Max Wittek made it 2-2 after 37 minutes when his fierce shot took a deflection off captain Mark Hudson’s head. It might, though, have gone in anyway.
TSV hit a post during the first half, while Macheda fired home only for his effort to be disallowed for offside. That came with the score at 0-0, but Macheda still put the Bluebirds ahead with their first goal.
Ruben Okotie had an effort disallowed after 74 minutes as the boys from Bavaria had the edge.
City tired a little, but that was to be expected after three days of intensive training.
Munich only arrived for the start of their training camp yesterday and have yet to start their main work.
The Bluebirds sent on Kim Bo-Kyung and Etien Velikonja as the baking heat took a toll on their players. Nicky Maynard and Federico Macheda, who had done a lot of running, made way for the two subs.
Finally, Kenwyne Jones took over from Joe Mason.
The winner came after 88 minutes when Velikonja fired home at the second attempt. Magnus Eikrem made a break down the right, Daehli crossed and Velikonja’s shot was blocked.
He reacted quickly to shoot in at the second attempt.

I think this guy is going to be on the walls of a lot of kids bedrooms by the end of this season, lets see if he can chip in with a few too.

What's impressive is that he is so consistently good often players that young are inconsistent as is expected.
It's very promising for the future.
I got a good feeling about Macheda too. Got the impression he wasnt grounded at united. Early success went to his head and he got lazy. He put in a shift today and looked sharp.Hopefully he can fulfills his potential at Cardiff.

I think he would actually make a decent captain, he only has to work on his shot to become a perfect player in my eyes. Ive been impressed by macheda too

yes
He'll get his chance finally:
Terry Phillips:
Spoke to Ole last night and he says Slovenian international striker Etien Velikonja will get a chance to make his mark in Cardiff City's first team this season.
Velikonja, 25, was overlooked by former manager Malky Mackay, but Solskjaer made it clear he believes this could be his season.
“I am sure Ettie will get the chance to show what he is capable of,” said Solskjaer, speaking at the team hotel in Walchsee, Austria.
Velikonja signed for City two years ago, but made only three league appearances under Mackay.
When Solskjaer took charge at the start of this year he sent Velikonja out, 25, on loan to Portuguese club Rio Ave.
The former NK Maribor hit-man is in Cardiff’s squad on their week-long pre-season tour in Austria, but he is having treatment on a hamstring injury sustained in training.
It’s not serious, but Velikonja won’t be risked in either of this Saturday’s two fixtures, against TSV 1860 Munchen (4pm) and Albanian Superliga club KF Teuta Durres (6.30pm).
Velikonja faces a tough challenge to break in with Adam Le Fondre, Federico Macheda, Javi Guerra and Nicky Maynard among those vying for first team places, but Solskjaer says: “Etien is part of our strikeforce.
“The boys produced some good work in the first week or so of training before he suffered a hamstring injury. It’s clear he has been working hard over the summer.
“It’s up to every player to show they are worth a chance. WE have a lot of matches and I am sure he will get chance to show what he is capable of.”
