' Ex Cardiff City player Tommy Smith '

Tue Jul 15, 2014 2:23 pm

Tuesday 15th July 2014.

Brentford have handed a trial to former QPR and Cardiff City forward Tommy Smith.

The 34-year-old has been without a club since leaving the Bluebirds in May after a disappointing two seasons in South Wales.

Smith, who started his career at Watford, has also played for Sunderland, Derby and Portsmouth, and has racked up more than 500 career appearances.

The wide man trained with the Bees at their Jersey Road base this morning and could play a part in Thursday's pre-season friendly with Boreham Wood.

He had a good career in his younger years Im pretty sure he was already on or near the 25k mark
So at 32 players rarely have a pay cut I can pretty much see him having 5k added more than likely.

Is it just me who thinks he weren't too bad when he first came to us? Loads on here we're touting him as Malky's best signing in that window before he got injured. He weren't as bad as a lot make out IMO

Spot on. Smith was probably our best player before he got injured, then he unfortunately didn't come back the same.

Unfortunately, 2blue2handle is one of several fans who are happy to slate every single player Malky has signed, despite these players all contributing to take us to the Premiership. Very strange.

Gwon on then, tell me that if true you think Smith was a good signing on 30k a week

He was excellent for about 2 months before the injury but thats all, it was a terrible signing in the end. I would say he made very little contribution to our promotion and we would have done just as well and saved a fortune if he never joined the club.
25 appearances in all competitions and 1 goal in 2 years is not good value for a 30k a week player.

Not sure why you think I slate all Malkys players, he made a lot of good signings early on but the fact remains he lost the plot and signing a load of duds on big wages.

So it's a fact Smith was on 30k a week now is it? That's strange, you asked Annis if this was true further up the thread, make up your mind!

How stupid of Malky not predicting Smith would get injured and how stupid of Malky not predicting that Smith wasn't going to quite come back the same after his injury.

Cornelius was a dud, no dispute there but the rest of Malky's "duds" were keeping us above the relegation zone before Tan did the damage. We beat Man City - the most expensively assembled team in Premier League history with Malky's "duds". One of Malky's "duds" has also gone on to be one of the best performers at the World Cup.

Anyway, we are going off topic here. A player of Smith's age needs a run of games and since getting injured, Smith didn't get the run of games required to get back to the 100% match sharpness needed to match his form before the injury. Players of Smith's age in Smith's position getting an injury 2 months into the season to ruin all the pre season work find it very hard to come back with the same sharpness.

I actually thought Smith looked very good in the friendly against Bilbao last season, but I think Smith is at an age where he really needs regular games to go from turning in average performances to turning in great performances. If Smith moves to Brentford and is given regular games, then I'm sure he will still be able to show the quality he has, as Smith is an excellent pro. I wish him well.

Fair enough if you think he was a good signing, I would say a disaster

But you've admitted Smith was excellent before his injury. If Smith didn't get injured, he might have been excellent all season. But we will never know because of bad luck. That's football.

Smith was an awesome signing at first. Never recovered from the injury which is a shame.

It was unlikely thought at his age and having been a bit part player previously. Malky never really gave him a chance to recover.
Irrespective I don't think it's bad luck, just a bad signing and on way to much wages if the reported 30k a week is true.
2 months of good form on big wages is a bad signing in my book.

He clearly never wanted to leave London so Malks just kept adding zeroes until he agreed to move.

He started out well no question but even so if the 30k is true there is no way that was value for money. Especially as we were in the champ, that sort of money is irresponsible.

I remember rightly, 2B praised this signing cause it was on a free and that he fitted into our style in the first few home games.

I thought he done brilliantly when he came in but after Watford home he never looked the part anymore and rightfully sold.

We don't need players who are happy to wait on the bench, need players who wanna play week in week out.

Don't remember but it makes sense, malky was signing well and he passed the dossier test. I'm not going to try and no more than a manager and it's multiple staff. I will judge them on what they do, I think that's the right thing to do.

It turns out he was a disaster to most fans, obviously not all, something think he was a great signing. But then we didn't think he was on 30k a week.... I still don't.
